Toddler fell on baby

My (rather large) 2 year old just tripped and fell on my 7 month old baby. She was lay on her tummy on the mat playing with toys but she was just drifting off to sleep. When my son fell, he landed on her with his hand if that makes sense, not his body. So he broke his fall with the palm of his hand on her lower back. Then he pushed himself up, so that would have put weight on her back again.

She opened her eyes for a second but then just carried on drifting off and was fast asleep almost straight away. She didn't cry. I woke her up again straight away as I am so worried and want to see how she is acting. She doesn't seem to be behaving abnormally and I've sort of touched all around her spine and ribs to see if she flinched in pain or anything but she seems totally fine.

I'm still very worried, though, as I can't help but feel a toddler's hand landing on you must be quite a lot for a baby's spine to handle?

Help! Would you take her into the GP or elsewhere maybe if it were you?

its not something I’d seek medical help for based on your description but if you are concerned then it would be A&e. A GP wouldn’t be able to tell you anything about her spine without an X-ray.

I think if he had damaged her spine, she'd be in pain and crying. I don't thinkid be worried, and I'm a real worried!

She'd be in pain if any damage was done. Babies are remarkably resilient and she was relaxed at the time which would help. If you've ever done any sport like gymnastics, horseriding, trampoline where there is a risk of falling, you will recall the teacher telling you to try to relax as you fall as muscles can absorb significant impact when soft.

Thanks everyone. I will see how it goes.

Went for a relaxing trip to soft play to calm my nerves () and she still seems fine. I just feel worried sick though, I suppose because my 2yo just seems so Much bigger than her.

I guess my husband is a lot bigger than me, but if he fell on me in the same way it would be fine wouldn't it? So it's probably the same for her.

@TootOnTheBends yes I suppose you're right. I guess I just thought a GP might do some doctor wizardly and be able to feel if she was ok with his hands or something. I don't know

@Balloonhearts yes that's true actually, good point! I have a friend who had what should have been a very serious fall out of a moving vehicle once. Luckily she was incredibly drunk (she wasn't the driver!). The ambulance crew said the alcohol probably saved her life as she hadn't tensed for the fall!
