Activities for Myopia

Hey, just looking for advice! My little boy is 4, and has a prescription of -4.50 due to myopia, aswell as strabismus and Nystagmus.

Ive been reading that things like reading and writing aren’t great for myopia and can cause more damage, so I’m wondering if anyone has any other ideas what to do when he’s home from school which won’t potentially damage his eyes?

We do have walks, ride bikes etc but it’s getting colder and needing more ideas!

also, is there anything I can say to school so he can get out of class for a bit to give his eyes a break? Unfortunately they don’t have a lot of time outside apart from break.

thank you!

Is he wearing myopia control glasses?

Nope, never been mentioned! He’s been seen by ophthalmology since 18 months and never heard anything about them, maybe because his prescription has been quite stable?

If he is -4.50 at 4 years old, he has the potential to be significantly shortsighted as he grows.

I think swimming is recommended as it works really well for the whole body and helps to build up the muscles.
Nothing traumatic (boxing, jumping) or producing a lot of impact.
Maybe tennis would be good. It trains you to watch the ball = trains the eye muscles.
Good you are thinking about it! I'd also check him every 6 months to monitor any changes.

Oh sorry missed the “while at home bit”. What about lego and some crafts? With the good light of course.

Our doctor told us if you ever watch anything it needs to be in a big screen. No tablets/phones.

This is a question for his opthamologist consultant, not the internet.
He is very myopic for his age and you need suggestions that would work for him from a qualified opthamologist who knows his case.

Hi mums this is a problem that also affects my son, he sits for many hours doing his homework or at the PC. I've heard about a product with sensors to be placed on the desk that emits a voice that reminds the child to keep a proper posture every time he bends over the desk and also reminds him to turn on the light whenever the environment gets too dark. This sounds very interesting, as it covers precisely the two main causes of myopia. What do you think about it? It could be very useful in my opinion...
