Cold sores

My 16 DD has cold sore breakouts a lot. Every month. She's devastated.
Anything that works to help get rid permanently or to mitigate ? She got it from her boyfriend. Can they keep reinfecting each other?

Just a thought has she been to the GP for a blood test repeated cold sores can be a symptom of anemia?

Flyhigher · 14/11/2023 23:15

Thanks

no, they wont reinfect each other, once you are infected, you are never uninfected.

L-lysine every day.

SgtJuneAckland · 14/11/2023 23:21

L lysine supplements can help, I only take a few when I feel like I've got one coming and they don't even erupt, some people take one a day as a preventative but I've never had frequent enough cold sores for that. Also lysine lip balm applied with a cotton bud, Holland and Barrett do little pots

Lysine - it’s just a protein, you can take every day. I guess big pharma makes nothing out of it as it’s not patented so you don’t see it marketed to death but it’s excellent.

Zovirax by prescription
btw oral herpes (cold sores) can be spread to the genitalia.

pinkfondu · 15/11/2023 05:28

Poor thing.

She needs to learn proper hygiene when she has one so as not to spread to other parts of her body. Or his or vice versa.

With regards to an actual cold sore she needs to start using comped patches. They are the best thing ever. They healing is so much quicker and cleaner. But don't us the cheap versions they are crap. Leave it on till it's ready to come off it's self no need to pull it off and change on a set number of hours.

If she can catch it when it tingles, she may not have noticed this yet, they it can really cut down on how much it comes out.

I've had them for 40 years but still remember how I felt at her age x

Blood tests. Being run down with low b12, low iron can cause repeat outbreaks.

giving up gluten stopped mine

Flyhigher · 15/11/2023 06:21

She gets redness at both sides of her mouth rather than an actual blister on the lips.

Anyone else have this? And what helps? Thanks for all the above ideas x she says she doing most of them.

Are you sure it’s cold sores and not angular chelitis? Vit B deficiency/low iron?

rogueone · 15/11/2023 06:37

I have suffered with cold sores since I was 9. I have tried everything but the only thing that works for me now is the lipzor machine. I did buy it when it first came out many years ago so alot cheaper than it is now

Are you absolutely sure it's not angular cheilitis? It can sort of seem like cold sores but it's different. If you don't treat it it hangs around for ages but quick cream from the GP it's sorted.

I thought I had cold sores for about a year in my early 20s. The cold sore creams did absolutely nothing, finally saw the GP and it cleared up very quickly.

RecycleMePlease · 15/11/2023 06:58

Lysine, Acyclovir, and seeing if she can notice her triggers - ex had to stay away from Chocolate for instance.

If it's every month, could it be hormonal - the PP mentioning anemia might be onto something too

Flyhigher · 15/11/2023 11:01

@NotMyDayJob what did the gp prescribe?

@NotMyDayJob what did the gp prescribe?

It was fucidin h, an antibiotic anti fungal cream. It's a prescription only cream
