DD (13) gets intense left shoulder pain in a very specific small spot (front, where shoulder meets chest) when running long distance. It also leaves her gasping for breath. We recently realised this when we did a run together but she says it happens every time she has to do long distance running at school. She has to stop running and it goes away after 20 seconds or so but starts up again after a few hundred metres running. We have been to the GP who referred for a chest X-ray and an ECG. The chest X-ray was roughly normal with some lung inflammation (she had a cough at the time) but no rib abnormalities which could cause thoracic outlet syndrome (causes pain in this same spot). We've been told that the GP practice can't do the ECG which was booked as they are not trained to do ECGs on children and that a referral for a paediatric ECG would take over 1 year. The GP advised us to go to A&E, it's not an emergency but something that needs to be checked in much less than 1 year! This feels awkward but given the state of NHS waiting lists and obviously worried it could be a heart issue we will go. I wondered if anyone else has experienced similar? It is concerning but DD is otherwise sporty and no other sports give her this issue (dancing, swimming, martial arts, PE in general other than running), but they probably don't raise her heart rate as much.
