Tonsillitis again

4 year old DS has got tonsillitis - complaining of a sore throat, barely eating, on looking down his throat his tonsils are huge with blood and pus on them.

He's had this before at least 4-5 times that I remember.

I'm going to call the GP tmw but what are the likely actions of GP? Antibiotics or not?
I was shocked that they were actually bleeding a little bit this evening. They've been swollen and pusy in the past but they really were a mess this evening.

☹️

Some people are prone to it. Me and my partner both are /were I had mine removed at 13/14. Our daughter has had it twice now and she is 3.

I hope you got on ok at the GP. You might get antibiotics you might not. Tonsillitis is offer viral. When we went with my daughter she was on day 5 of a fever and day 2 of barely any food or fluids. 2 grapes and 1oz of water. He said probably viral not a lot we can do keep up with the rests and fluids. Then he took her temperature and at 40.6C switched to antibiotics. After 2 days she was much better

Thanks for your reply @Superscientist .
We didn't get antiobiotics and the doctor was quite certain it is viral. Your poor daughter,
I'm sorry. He's had a rough couple of days but he's had it much worse than this before. He's not really had a temperature this time around but he was sweating buckets and drooling like mad last night! Will see how he is when he wakes up.

If he's drooling and still has a temp , id call and get antibiotics. It can turn nasty quite quickly. Hope he's on the mend soon x

If he has pus on his tonsils it's not viral, it's bacterial and he will need antibiotics.

Viral tonsillitis presents as swollen inflamed painful tonsils without the white patches.

Keep an eye on the drool and that he is still able to swallow. If you at all suspect he can't swallow that's a sign to get immediate help. My sister has only had tonsillitis once but resulted in an admission for IV antibiotics and ended up quite poorly with it. My partner's tonsillitis is nearly always viral and he gets pus on his tonsils for viral and bacterial but it is considerably worse when bacterial.
Keep an eye on him and if it is getting worse not better over the next 2 days or so go back to the doctor

Thanks everyone. I kept a close eye .
His tonsils were actually almost normal again when he woke up. He was extremely tired for a few days and now he's almost back to normal, apart from a lingering cough.

This. Sounds like he needs antibiotics.
