How is your experience with gain weight after 3 months

My newborn boy was progressing really fast in first 3 months, he doubled his weight in 90 days by gaining in average 35 grams per day which is more then expected (1.1kg per month).

However, now entering 4th month, he is in average getting 10-15 grams per day which is about 300-500 gr per month.

I know that drop is expected after 3 months, but was not expecting he will suddenly start reaching slower 50-60% then in first 3 months. I can't help my anxiety, we are measuring his weight at home every 2,3 days.

I honestly don't think I noticed. I took both DC to the clinic about once a month I think? I do remember DD plateauing around 4 months so I offered a feed every two hours (BF) and her weight gain improved again.

When you say that you are weighing LO every 2 or 3 days, this does seem excessive. There's no need to be concerned unless LO has dipped 2 centiles. In which case you should speak to your HV.

Are you usually this anxious or is a new thing since LO arrived?

How is his weight from a chart perspective. Is he still between the same percentile lines?
I'm going to be a hypocrite here because I absolutely did the same but reduce the weighing if you can. I found doing it on her week birthday was a good way of reducing it and then every other week it's now every 1-2 months. It was obsessive for a while as she didn't feed very well but by some miracle gained weight
At that age we had fortnightly weigh ins with the HV due to my daughters reflux and from 7-13 months she only gained a total of 200g! But her HV and paediatrician and paediatrician were all happy with her as long as she didn't lose weight.

Have you got any reason to think he is Ill? If not weigh monthly if you can wait that long and mark his measurements on a growth chart. The overall pattern is what matters

How do you know? We only have babies weighed at 10 days, 6 weeks and 1 year here.

no reason to think he is ill, eating 10-12 times per day, making sounds, smiling, playing, but it is my stupid anxiety that pushes me to weight him every day

I'm sorry to hear that OP. Can you visit your GP or your HV to ask for some help? You clearly want to do your best by your baby and it sounds as if he is thriving but the micromanaging will exhaust you and it won't benefit your son. There are enough worries in life without creating them.Your anxiety is controlling you. Have you got a supportive partner?

RedCoffeeCup · 06/11/2023 19:56

Yes, it is absolutely normal for weight gain to slow down to 50-60% of what is was in the first 3 months. Sounds like he's right on track. Try to stop worrying OP.

Baby sounds happy and thriving. You however sound like you need some support Flowers

Please ring PANDAS Foundation and tell them about your anxiety regarding LO's weight and contact your HV and tell her what's going on too Flowers
