3 months old baby head size not moving for 3 weeks

Hi all,
In overall 14 weeks, male healthy baby, met all milestones.
On 10 week checkup his head was 40.5 cm which was above average for week 10.
Today at 14 week checkup his head is same which is in average for week 14.

However, my concern is that his head size did not change at all for 4 weeks, I am very scared. Pediatrician said it can stagnate sometimes for a few weeks, but I am still scared.

How is your experience?

None of mine (4) head their head circumferences measured that frequently!

ChampagneLassie · 03/11/2023 15:06

This isn’t measured in uk so you wouldn’t know which suggests it isn’t that important.

Jewelspun · 03/11/2023 15:14

Mine are adults. None of them ever had their heads measured. How ridiculous.

vgahdmi123 · 03/11/2023 15:15

I am in EU, they measure it every 4 weeks here

Never measured any of my children's heads so can't imagine it's very important.

If you hadn't measured him, would you be worried?

JassyRadlett · 03/11/2023 15:37

It is so hard to be consistent in measuring baby heads. All you need is the tape in a slightly different place and the difference can be quite significant.

sexnotgenders · 03/11/2023 15:40

Yep, this is not a thing. My fanny would tell you that both my children had a good head size at birth, but I haven't got a clue what happened to their heads from that point onwards?!?!

VanessaShanessaJenkins99 · 03/11/2023 15:44

They do measure the head circumference- my sons was measured at his 8 week check and his soft spot also checked - they told me he had a small fontanelle so i had to have his head measured monthly until he was 8 months old so it definitely is a thing they track, he had his 12 month review a few weeks ago and his head circumference was measured and tracked again

OfMark87 · 03/11/2023 15:49

I'm in Scotland and they measured my son's head a lot when he was born.
His jumped 2 percentiles from birth to two weeks and we ended up having to go for appointments at the hospital and an ultrasound when he was 5 weeks old to check for macrocephaly. (He's absolutely fine)

The hospital thought the first measurement at birth was wrong so this could be the same for you, just measured wrong.
Try not to worry too much x

Babies'heads are measured at birth and at the 8 week check here. If there are no problems , that is usually it in E & W. It is not very accurate. Baby writhes around and the tape measure slips. The trend is of note but one measurement being off the line is unlikely to worry any health care professional unless there are other problems. Repeat in a month.

HVPRN · 04/11/2023 18:38

Tape measure can slip and you could not be measuring in the same place as last time. Also, it isn't very much you're looking for in terms of growth when measuring so often, so may not be noticeable. Your health care provider should be able to reassure you and check again at a later date. Did you speak to your health care provider?

nocoolnamesleft · 05/11/2023 00:23

What was it on the previous measurements? It's a very subjective measurement (we were always taught measure 3 times, and take the largest measurement, but still don't believe it too much) so I wouldn't worry about a one off measurement but check again in a few weeks, as long as the anterior fontanelle is open.

gotomomo · 05/11/2023 00:28

Mine kids were measured twice, birth and 8 weeks, if no issues then they don't measure again, one of mine was in U.K., one USA

ImustLearn2Cook · 05/11/2023 00:37

@vgahdmi123 If the paediatrician isn’t worried then I wouldn’t worry.

It’s perfectly normal to worry about these sorts of things. We love our babies and want them to be ok.

Take a breath, everything is fine right now and if there is a problem in the future you will cross that bridge when you get to it.

ImustLearn2Cook · 05/11/2023 00:41

But on the other hand parents know their kids best. So, while it’s best not to get carried away with being overly anxious, do trust your instincts and don’t second guess yourself.

If you want a second opinion from a doctor, then that’s what you do.

surreygirl1987 · 05/11/2023 00:56

I was worried about craniosynostosis (sp?) as my son had ridges on his skull which I thought were from the sutres fusing early. I was also scared, but he was actually fine.
