13 year old boy not growing

Smallngrumpy · 01/11/2023 10:26

My 13 year old seems to have just stopped growing. Over the last couple if years he's put less and less on each month and his height has stayed more or less static.

According to height and weight charts ge is under weight.
We have tried to increase his portion s, added milk etc but made no difference.
Was hoping puberty would kick in and this would be sorted but it hasn't.
What do I do?

You can ask for a referral to an endocrinologist.

Smallngrumpy · 01/11/2023 11:31

@floofbag I have just contacted docs who want me to make appointment but who knows when that will be as have to call each morning for same day one

Growth does slow down just before puberty, but it certainly shouldn't stop for 2 years. If he is eating enough then there must be a health issue. Agree take him to.gp.and ask for endocrinology referral. Take down the dates of any heights and weights you have taken over the past couple of years as you have to make it clear that you are worried he hasn't actually grown rather than worried he is smaller than average. There is a huge range of height at that age so gp might not realise. That is a low weight though, 34kg. My 5ft 1 child got down to 36kg and frankly looked emaciated.

ASquareIsARectangle · 01/11/2023 11:39

How does he feel about it?

Crazycrazylady · 01/11/2023 11:46

That is very slight for a 13 year old. Absolutely ring and demand an appointment . If there is a hormone issue there are absolutely options available now but it's important they are treated on time.

Hi I’m in a similar boat re the height and the stalled growth with my 13 year old DS. However he does weigh more than your son but he’s very thin.

I had a couple of phone consultations with the GP who then referred him to hospital. The hospital consultant didn’t seem too concerned re the stalled growth (less than 2 cm in 2 years). She took some bloods and said she would see him in 8 months. She was more concerned that his height didn’t sit with the rest of his immediate family. DH and I are both above average height, as his is sibling.

Are you and his dad tall?

Potofteaplease · 01/11/2023 17:49

Whilst waiting for an appointment, feed him lots of red meat… maybe it was a coincidence but my 14 year old gained 6 inches in a year after I did this ( lots of spag Bol!!)

Smallngrumpy · 01/11/2023 18:22

Just to answe a few questions, I am small 5ft 1, and DH 6ft 3". When he was born and til about 11 years old he was tracking for 6ft.
He is a fussy eater. Wont eat much meat, the odd bit of chicken and steak but thats it. We tried peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast amd supper but made no difference.
Gonna have to be on phone to docs at 8 in morn.
Son not happy but Im just too concerned now.

He just needs to eat enough to actually grow. His diet sounds awful.
he needs dietitian more than a blood test, ask the GP to refer for dietary advice

My son was very small for his age, turned out to be growth hormone deficiency. He's on replacement hormone injections now

Smallngrumpy · 02/11/2023 09:07

I have managed to get him an app at docs today so need to gather my evidence.
His diet isnt brilliant, partly due to my inability to cook and partly because he gets bored of food so fast. When he likes something I have to be careful not to give too often. But I feel he eats enough, more than me, i would put weight on if I ate what he does.

My nephew wasn’t gaining weight, it turned out that he had Coliacs. Since removing gluten from his diet, he has shot up.

MintJulia · 02/11/2023 09:13

My ds slowed down around that age. Was the smallest in his class, very skinny, didn't even seem particularly hungry.

Then at 14 & 2 months he started eating 😱 He's grown five inches in the last year. Now he eats more than I do and is constantly snacking. I'm buying new school trousers every four months, and he's into men's shoes.

So check with the GP certainly, but I wouldn't worry too much yet.

Alargeoneplease89 · 02/11/2023 09:14

I have a thin teen and he didn't start growing more until 14 and he increased his calories. I think being underweight is a factor. If he's fussy will he have protein shakes to build him up abit?

Notcookie · 02/11/2023 09:15

I am in a similar position with my DS. He is growing but very slowly. An inch in a year. He is worrying about it but I just assumed he would get his growth spurt soon and catch up. Interested to see how you get on with the GP. DH isn't coeliac but is gluten intolerant. Now wondering if its worth getting a blood test for coeliac. Although they're not that accurate apparently.

Superscientist · 02/11/2023 09:44

Have you plotted his number on the charts in the red book? You can find them online if you search boys height chart who if it's not locatable.
If they are within 2 percentile points it's classed as normal but at one point by daughter was over 3 and her paediatrician wasn't concerned. At the time she was 50th for height and 1st for height. Similar to you I'm 5ft2 and partner is 6ft. Partner was smallest in his class until he reached puberty and ended up one of the taller boys. I have always been small, me and my sister shared clothes with a 3 year aged gap. She's only an inch taller than me now! My mum had me to the doctor on multiple occasions for not growing and if my daughter wasn't being weighed in paeds every 4-6 months I think I would be seeing the GP about my daughter too. Worries about growth are probably one of my worst parts of parenting.
I hope you get on ok with the drs x

TheDogIsInCharge · 02/11/2023 09:57

My son was small and skinny until around 15/16. Smallest in his class and his friends towered over him. He didn't really have a growth spurt, just started growing again aged 15. He's now 6ft 1 (still skinny though, despite eating tons) and reached that height only about 6 months ago, he's twenty. His uncle was exactly the same and didn't stop growing until he was early twenties. Always worth checking with the GP but he may be just a late developer.

Smallngrumpy · 02/11/2023 10:12

Wow thanks for all the replies.
He has some issues digesting foods. At least once a month he will feel sick after eating and may throw up. He also cant drink Pepsi or coke but can have fanta, lemonade within reason.
I have tracked his weight height which is why I am concerned. hes just stopped growing at all.
He started to slow down the summer before he started high school and has nver recovered. Hes always been on the smaller side, but hes definitely underweight now and has been for a while so I just feel a talk with the docs may ease my mind or give us a way forward.

What’s his height? I think it may be worth getting a test for coeliac just to rule it out, DS is in a similar position to yours although he has tested negative for it. Still struggles to eat a lot though

Smallngrumpy · 02/11/2023 10:33

@ASquareIsARectangle he is 5 stone 5 pounds and 5 foot.

He may be eating more than you, but is clearly not eating enough for him, so isn’t able to grow as not having enough nutrients

coeliacs test is a good idea
