Baby's first jabs - did you give calpol before and when?

Morning mums! My baby boy has his first immunisations this morning and I googled how long before to give him some calpol but saw a few things saying you shouldn't give calpol beforehand, but I'm sure our health visitor advised us to! So looking for experiences from others. Also hoping you can answer the question of when to give it please🥰

I only gave it after, if needed.

Nejnej · 01/11/2023 06:58

I just gave it as soon as we got home but lots of my friends have a dose in the car park beforehand! (I forgot to take it with me!)

RedCoffeeCup · 01/11/2023 06:58

No - I would have given it after but they didn't need it.

QuiltedHippo · 01/11/2023 06:59

In the appointment not beforehand, I got the nurse to do it as I couldn't bare messing up the first ever dose for my precious first born.
Hope all goes well, it's worse for us than them I think!

peonyjam · 01/11/2023 06:59

I gave it in the waiting room just before it. I think this is what was advised on the letter but this advice seems to vary in different areas. Immediately afterwards might have been more tricky because they are upset

Baby needs three doses of calpol at 4-6 hour intervals post immunisation as per guidelines. The Men B very often gives a fever. The nurse should advise.
Practice nurse.

My baby is now 7 months old so have done this fairly recently. I was advised for each vaccination not to give Calpol beforehand as they wouldn't give vaccination if he'd had any (don't know why). They said to bring it with us and to give straight away afterwards. We did that each time and was fine. Good luck with them Smile

Nursemumma92 · 01/11/2023 07:08

The advice now is to not give it beforehand- they will check baby's temperature before the give the vaccines to make sure they don't have a fever already so if you have given calpol before this would be masked. The practice nurse at my practice would not then continue with the vaccines if they know you have given them calpol as they cannot be sure it is safe. You can give them straight after, I just got my babies settled then gave it once we got in the car or waiting room after.

Only after if needed.
As someone who arrived at the gp to be told the nurse wasn't available anyone I'm so glad I took that approach instead of potentially unnecessarily drugging my baby.

I was also advised to take the approach I took.

dementedpixie · 01/11/2023 07:42

3 doses of paracetamol should be given as standard after the 1st vaccination that includes MenB. 1st dose straight after and then the others at 4-6 hour intervals after that

cptartapp · 01/11/2023 07:43

Don't worry if the nurse doesn't check baby's temperature. Have never done this in over twenty years and a recent immunisation update said not routinely necessary.
For parents that have also given calpol beforehand because of vaccines and not as baby was unwell, we would immunise anyway. Get that protection into them asap. We might not have another appointment for weeks! Different if baby is unwell of course. There has to be a very good reason for delaying vaccination as you can never be sure when you will see them again.

Thank you everyone, he's just had his jabs and I didn't give calpol before, the nurse said that their advice is to give it straight after so it was good that I didn't give it before😄
