Are baby classes essential?

I have a 15 week old baby. My husband keeps saying that I should get to some baby classes. My baby is a good sleeper at night but has a good number of meltdowns during the day that I’m pretty sure are gas related as he is always pushing and grunting. The days where I need to get out the door early I sometimes end up in tears as I’m so stressed trying to get us both out and ready!

This has really put me off bothering with baby classes as to me it just feels like more hassle than it’s worth. Much prefer to stay at home with baby where I can read or sing to him and feed as I need to. We go out walks everyday with the pram or trips to mall. Will he miss out if we don’t do classes? I am looking at a swimming class once a week but that’s about it!

Hey op,

Definitely don't go if you don't feel comfortable or ready yet.

With my first I didn't go until she was around 7-8 months. Looking back I should've went sooner for my own MH. Would've felt less alone as having a child is scary and can be a lonely journey.

I have a 13 week old as well and we went to our first class last week🙂 x

At this age, it's more for your benefit than for baby. I didn't go to baby classes with my first and won't be with my second (now 6m). DH suggested I go to a baby massage class at the children's centre. I flat out refused and said if he thinks it's of benefit, he can take her. He hasn't.

Once baby is mobile and able to play with toys etc then I would definitely suggest going to stay and plays, rhyme times etc.

Absolutely not remotely essential for the baby! They were for me-and they might be for you as they baby becomes more settled. It's a constantly changing picture- tell him you're OK for now.

If you're happy at home and going for walks then save classes until your baby's is older. I found them a god send for the toddler years and I still take my 4 year old now

Baby classes n my experience are for the mother. A network of other women in the same boat and in the same area is invaluable.
