Can any one tell me what these marks are on my toddlers hands

For the past week my nearly 2 year old boy has come up in these strange blister type blemished on his hands and face

Does any one recognise what these are ?

It's definitely not a burn (it looks like a burn and they keep appearing and disappearing on his face to )

I will book a doctors appointment but should I be worried ?

Are they blisters, they look a bit like hives? Hives would suggest some kind of allergic reaction, blisters could be hand, foot and mouth? Either way gp is not a bad idea.

Blackoutbeans · 25/10/2023 13:23

Such a strange pattern, could it be a bite mark?

Are they always in a ring shape? And always the same size ring?

Urticaria hives?

BertieBotts · 25/10/2023 13:30

It looks like an allergic reaction. Is it maybe the shape of some jewellery you wear? I think the GP is a good idea.

Does he go to nursery?

No it's definitely not an imprint of any jewellery of mine and he doesn't go to nursery , how ever last week he was terribly I'll with a bug but he seems fine now though , could it be something to do with that?

Look very much like hives, which indicates an allergic reaction. I'd just go to your GP. There's a standardised skin prick test they can do for this sort of stuff that will help you figure out what it is that is causing it.

Midnightkittycat · 25/10/2023 13:37

Hives? My ds had them when he was a toddler, on and off for a few weeks. Gp and pharmacist both explained that it's common for young children to have an allergic reaction to a virus, and his started after he had a tummy bug.

They didn't bother him, but I gave him an antihistamine when he looked itchy.

pinksummer · 25/10/2023 13:45

My 8yr old gets these when he's fighting off some sort of virus. When he's under the weather but I can't pin point it I usually find these somewhere on him.

CaptainMorgansMistress · 25/10/2023 13:46

Have a look at hand, foot and mouth disease - the first stage is often cold / flu like symptoms followed by blisters on hands, feet and mouth which from memory are v similar to your pic.

DisquietintheRanks · 25/10/2023 13:54

Its not that unusual to get hives following a viral infection. If that's what is causing them they should settle down quite soon. If they persist then I'd be looking at possible food or contact allergies. If they become worse, or florid (google it) seek medical advice.

ManchesterLu · 25/10/2023 13:56

It's definitely an allergy - I get exactly the same. The fun part comes when you try to work out what it's an allergy to!

SnapdragonToadflax · 25/10/2023 14:00

I think probably hives following the virus - my son used to get either these or a really nasty red post-viral rash.

Take him to a pharmacy and see what they think- they'll probably suggest infant Piriton.

diggermama · 25/10/2023 14:01

That looks like hand, foot and mouth to me OP

DollyDaydream78 · 25/10/2023 14:03

My DD always used to get hives similar to this when she was/had been unwell

Vivi0 · 25/10/2023 14:08

I recently had a virus and had hives on and off for a few weeks after.

It does look similar to hives however, I’m not a medic, so I would probably just make an appointment to discuss with your GP.

Inyourwildestdreams · 25/10/2023 14:14

@sxl Agree with the others - looks like the hives that my DS gets when recovering from a virus. He tends to get them for a good few days and they flare up and down throughout each day. I find he gets lots more if he’s particularly upset or getting worked up about something. DS seems to get them on his face, wrists and tops of his feet.

Have you tried some Piriton liquid? DSs usually go down with that.

Definitely worth having a think about any new foods etc that may have been introduced recently incase there’s an allergy at play though.

100% when he's having a tantrum I've noticed he goes bright red off them ! It's got to be that I agree

Thank you

@sxl Fingers crossed that’s what it is and they’ll calm down soon. Definitely worth running it past a GP if they’re not getting any better though.

stayathomer · 25/10/2023 14:23

My so. Used to get them(still does actually!), so we were told it’s the body reacting to early stages of a viral infection. Told this by two doctors then another one told us it was an allergy which to be fair we already knew he had some form of an allergy- he has eczema, gets hayfever has asthma so is on antihistamines nearly full time.

Superscientist · 26/10/2023 16:53

A tip for identifying the allergen - hives typically occur on/after the 2nd exposure. You can have something and be completely fine for the first time but it triggers an over reaction the next time you have it.
You can also develop an allergy to anything at any time so don't discount something that has been happily in their lives or diet for a long time
