Child’s height and weight

Hiya.
I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts.
My 7 year old son was on the 91st percentile for height and weight at birth. He is still on the 91st for height but is now on the 9th percentile for weight. I know it’s still within the healthy bracket but I always thought they should both be around the same ? I can’t really find any information anywhere because he’s over 5. I’ve always said I personally think he’s a bit thin even though all he does is eat ! Does anyone else have a child that’s height and weight are at opposite ends ? My other children are all closer on them both and part of me thinks I’m overreacting with his but another part of me is a bit concerned if his weight doesn’t catch up with his height 🙈

is he well otherwise? alert and full of beans?
what us his diet like?
exercise?
does he sleeps well?
any family members with coeliacs?

tbh I would write down anything he eats and drinks for a couple of weeks and see the gp with your observation.

You can check BMI centile on the NHS website. If underweight suggest contacting school nurse or GP practice for advice.

Does coeliac run in the family at all? I've seen other threads on here of children in same position and they've been diagnosed with coeliac disease. I hope he's OK bless him.

Here's the link. If he eats well and being tall and slim runs in the family it's probably nothing to worry about.

Yeah he’s absolutely fine ! Very active, muscly and fit. Never sits still.
As for diet, he’s a very picky eater so only eats the same handful of foods at meal times (texture is a huge problem) but eats a huge amount. My husband has even said he thinks our son eats more than he does in a day ! 🤣 He is ALWAYS hungry and munching on something so it’s amazing that he’s so thin. GP didn’t seem interested in seeing him when I tried to raise concerns about his pickiness a few months ago because he eats at least 1 thing from each food group ?
Didn't think of coeliac actually ! He’s usually saying he’s got bad poos but I just put that down to him being his father’s son ! 🤣

Kids are supposed to be skinny, and the percentiles don’t need to match up. Ds spent most of his childhood on the 2nd %ile for weight and 50th for height.

If he’s full of energy and eats well (ignoring some pickiness) then there’s unlikely to be anything of concern going on.

My daughter was 50th percentile for weight and 1st for height at 2.
I raised it with her paediatrician and dietician as it put her cross 3 percentiles and potentially overweight. They weren't worried especially as she looks "normal and in proportion"
If she had looked overweight they might have suggested something. She's since dropped to the 25th percentile with weight and stayed on the 1st for height which is within normal.

When was he last weighed? As long as he is not actively losing weight, eating well I wouldn't be too concerned. More is within 2-3 percentile bands. I would probably try to up the calories of his meals for a couple of months to see if that moves him up slightly. The 9th percentile is 4 different to his height so if you could get him closer to the 25th that would be closer to "normal". He very much could be a tall and slim person.

Who measured his height? This is notoriously difficult to do. My daughter apparently lost 3 cm in height over 2 months. Did she? No. The second time she wasn't the most cooperative.

My son was like a strip of lean bacon for a year or two- constantly on the go. But he's fleshed out (a little!) over the past few years.
