Ds5 not keeping water down

Started being sick at bedtime last night,

Now at the stage there's nothing in his tummy I just gave 5ml water ( woke up saying thirsty) within minutes he was sick.

Seems ok otherwise ( when he is awake obviously it's nighttime so he's sleeping) just worried and wondering how long before you would wait to contact 111.

I’d give it till the morning, if still not keeping water down then 111 to see if he needs to be seen by an out of hours GP. Hope he feels better soon

DD had this at that age. 111 weren't interested, said just needed to wait it out unless other symptoms.

It took about 5 days before it stopped, with diarrhoea as well, she got very weak.

Not fun but they can go without food for that long. Sips of water and try to get sugar and salt in too - diaralyte, sweets, bread sticks or crackers. I gave DD glacier mints to suck, put me off them for life!

By all means try 111 but I don't think they'd want him in unless he needs saline drip.

If he’s not keeping water down, he needs to be seen by a doctor. DD2 couldn’t keep water down when she had a sickness bug, and had to be admitted to hospital to be rehydrated (age 5 years). Get him checked.

We had this with ds4, vomited every 15-30 minutes for days. Took him to a&e and they gave antiemetics and hydration, and said some children get stuck in a cycle of vomiting.

I'm not usually an advocate for a&e for a bug, but if they can't keep water down and stop doing wees then that's a problem.

Crush some ice cubes and give him the chips. It melts down the throat and won't induce vomiting like swallowing water would.

I’d give 111 a call now. They’ll talk you through dehydration symptoms and give you guidelines to help you work out if it’s safe to keep trying to get fluids in at home and or if it’s time to give up and go to a&e for a rehydration drip.

Personally I would check the symptoms of dehydration and be aware of those and then offer tiny sips to of water. It's not been 24 hours yet. Also I always found my kids could tolerate those flavoured frozen ice pops when they couldn't manage sips of water.

Thanks all, he's woken up bright as a button and been for a wee so feel less worried, last sip of water stayed down so far 🤞

I always buy sugary ice lollies when mine are like this. Somehow seems to stay down as doesn't hit the stomach in one go and the sugar is also good!
