My child is sick every week since starting reception. I bought new calpol bottle and it’s almost finished. He is 4 years old so I give him 10ml. ( he turns 5 next month)
he has spiking temperature at 38plus
day 1 of temperature I gave him 4 doses (which is 40ml total)

day 3 I gave him 4 doses which is 40ml totals.

that is 80ml calpol and the bottle have 100ml.
I am terrified. Is this too much ! The bottle finished ! Can this cause any complications
I alternate with nurofen too

I queried this with the doctor recently as my DS had a lingering virus and I was worried I was giving too much medicine. The doctor said it wasn’t a problem but if he was coping with a high temperature then to ‘let it do its job’ and only give calpol/Nurofen if he was unhappy or in discomfort.

Does he have any symptoms other than a fever? You don't need to medicate a fever in isolation.

Also, medical advice is to use either Calpol or ibuprofen, switch to the other if necessary and if still no improvement, take medical advice before alternating.

AvengedQuince · 17/10/2023 20:06

Why are you giving calpol? He he complaining of pain or is the fever stopping him from getting adequate rest?

NannyR · 17/10/2023 20:13

I would only give Calpol if the fever is making him feel unwell or if he's in pain. It's not necessary to give it just to bring down a temperature with no other symptoms. A fever can be a good thing, raised body temperature makes it more difficult for bacteria and viruses to replicate.

He is tired, has bellyache and confused when he has fever. Since he was so young. When he gets fever, he starts hallucinating. It freaks me out. So you think I am over medicating ?

Have you had him to the doctors?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 17/10/2023 20:21

It's fine. Just follow the dosing.

Don't understand pps thinking it should only be given for a Temperature. The child is ill and will feel shit. Paracetamol helps.

On hospitals the paracetamol dose can be higher strength so I really wouldn't worry

megletthesecond · 17/10/2023 20:21

Fwiw I went through loads when mine had chicken pox. Sometimes you have crap periods of illness when their young.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 17/10/2023 20:22

The other thing you can do is alternate between nurofen and paracetamol.

KatyN · 17/10/2023 20:23

You can get larger bottles over the counter which feel less alarming as you hammer through them.

I wondered if they could do a loyalty scheme where for every 5 bottles you get a gin and tonic.

If he's hallucinating he needs to see a doctor, that's a v high temperature.

Insomniafromworrying · 17/10/2023 20:25

I took him to gp yesterday. He has covid but I never mentioned calpol to him.
I will book another appointment tomorrow as I am worried he’ll about the amount of calpol he had in the last 3 days (80ml)

did any mother give calpol to her child the full doses for few days ?

OP posts:
Insomniafromworrying · 17/10/2023 20:27

@ManchesterLu this is him since he was little, any minor temperature fluctuation in his body cause him to hallucinate

You're following the dosage. It's fine!

Brenna24 · 17/10/2023 20:53

Paracetamol is well tolerated long term in standard doses. A few days when he needs it is not a problem (even if hammering through the bottles looks scary). Please don't worry about it.

LeafHunter · 17/10/2023 21:01

You’re following the doses! Speak to a pharmacist but you really don’t need to waste a doctors appointment to say you think you’ve given too much calpol when you haven’t. If he needs it then give it to him, if he doesn’t then don’t.

Shopper727 · 17/10/2023 21:48

Does say on bottle if you’re giving for more than 3 days check with gp. Especially if he needs 4 doses per 24 hours is he hot every time you check, I think if he’s that unwell he needs to be checked out, hope he’s ok op and feeling better soon

I have 2 daughters who are in the same age group for paracetomol and nurofen and when they had covid we went through 3 bottles of each had to get a doctors note to explain why they were going through so much as the chemist would let me get it for them. Looked like they where just drinking it out the bottle in the end 🤣. I only give medicine when they really need it if they are managing to play and eat with a temp i try and let there body fight it off its self but if they are really not well then i give it..
