Coeliac - how long till you noticed a difference in your child?

My DD has recently been diagnosed at 11 months old. Bloods off the scale and very sensitive. We have had her off gluten now for 10 days and noticed her energy is back and she is able to stand again and her sleep has improved. She is still very pale and BM’s not back to normal but doc said it can take up to three months for BM’s to get normal again.

She is still so pale though!

Hi OP - same situation with my Dd (although she was 6yo) but she was also off the scale and so poorly I was convinced she had cancer! She showed improvement immediately but it takes about 6 months for the stomach to heal. My Dd grew more in the 6 months than she had in her entire life - the paediatrician was so pleased! She is still small for her age but that’s because the coeliac was stunting her growth.

Also to add, my DD is still pale and her stomach only really settled a few months after going GF. Her tummy was awful before and she was misdiagnosed with having toddler’s diarrhoea, gastritis and “anxiety” because, as the GP said, “DD was thinking she had heartburn when it was a tummy ache”. DD also suffered with headaches, joint pain, swollen stomach and very bad wind. It’s amazing the transformation after going GF.

My Dd grew more in the 6 months than she had in her entire life - to clarify, she grew more in the 6 months from going GF than she had in her entire life. For context, she was 9cm shorter than her brother at the exact same age, so a huge difference!

Whilst not relevant to an infant my daughter was diagnosed at 16.5 years after being ill for 5 years and an early +coeliac blood test being over looked.

After 6 months gluten free (ish) she grew another inch in height after we thought she was done growing the year before.

Still pale though...

Thank you for both of your responses. That’s amazing to hear the change in the GF diet and how they both grew! I am hoping she starts gaining weight soon but she has already gained 0.2kg in just one week. It’s so horrible as we are right in the thick of her recovery but I just need to have patience!

she was a rosey cheeked baby but it does sound like she might just be pale going forward!

Oh my, 11 months old! Poor thing.

My daughter was diagnosed at 9. She had vague symptoms for years e.g joint pains and headaches and only developed Gastro symptoms after positive blood tests (while waiting for gastroscopy).

She has been gf for 6 months now. She stopped vomiting almost immediately, had visibly more energy (and less headaches) within 3-4weeks but still has frequent stomach aches and joint pains, so is still in the healing process I think. That said, she was diagnosed late - her villi were completely flat when diagnosed and she had such a severe vit d deficiency that she had started to lose bone density.
