My 16 month old baby started limping 3 weeks ago and she doesn't want to walk now

Hi everyone

We think my daughter had covid 4 weeks ago. My husband and I tested positive and she had fever for 2 days and was ill at the same time so we are thinking probably covid.
I am taking my baby to a&e for the 5th time in 3 weeks tomorrow but I am just hoping to get some answers.

She is 16 months old and started walking about 3 months ago. Very active baby! However in the past 3 weeks she started limping so we took her to a&e and they said its irritable hip and should be gone in 5-10 days. Went back again 5 days later as her symptoms worsen. Paediatrician asked for X-rays and they were normal. 5 days later she seemed like shes not improving and nursery said she was standing up and shaking. We went again to a&e and they took blood tests (not sure what they were, however, they said they didn't do the ESR), and x-rays and ultrasound of her hips and all came back normal. They said she is constipated and gave us sachets for that. I left the hospital thinking surely constipation doesn't cause this much pain? I thought its almost laughable to be honest. Our daughter is still in pain, limping and struggling to stand up. She's been preferring to crawl. Her body seems stiff! Refusing to sit in her high chair and carseat and suddenly screams the house down when in the bath. In the past week I've been showering her with me while holding her up.

She has also been waking up at night every 2-3 hours even when we give her calpol. She seems to struggle mostly when she wakes up and after her naps.

My husband is thinking to wait for a week (follow the paediatrician advice!) and thinks I'm exaggerating but I'm just worrying so much I'm feeling sick. I am worried it would be cancer in the bone marrow but other than the fact she is in pain limping, she is happy when on painkillers and ibprufen and still eating well and seems alert!

I am so worried been not sleeping for weeks just thinking I'm not doing enough for my baby and I know there is something not right!

Having read some posts here, it does sound like discitis! We are taking our daughter to a&e again but just looking for some reassurance especially from the ones who already experienced something similar. Any advice would be much appreciated too!

Something is definitely wrong. You know your baby best - don't be bullied into cowering when your instincts are telling you to push for answers. You are right, you have this, and I support you. Go get them.

Hi Op. my nephew had the exact same thing - he was limping around aged 1 and the hospital scanned his hip and said it was an irritable hip. He’s now 4 and over summer, his foot (the same side as the one they said he had an irritable hip) turned in, he began limping and, after a week, he refused to walk altogether. My sister took him to A&E and they scanned his hip - all fine, but, after a second attendance, they scanned his foot and discovered that there was a bone in his foot that was putting pressure on a blood vessel so it wasn’t getting the blood supply he needed. Rather than jumping straight for surgery, the surgeon said to put his foot in a cast for 6 weeks to help shape the foot and to alleviate the pressure of the bone on the blood vessel. This all worked and he no longer has foot pain. I would ask your GP / A&E to scan his foot and to look for this bone malformation.

@RushinBushin Thank you so much for the advice couraging words!!
i have demanded MRI for my baby's spine and they approved it! They said they didnt see the reason for it but they will do it.
now the results came back and SHE INDEED HAS DISCITIS!!!!
i cannot believe it!
they thanked me for pointing them in the right direction and said it is an extremely rare condition which obviously i knew of!
thanks you so much to the mums on this thread for their advice and for explaing exactly what happened to their children! I do really appreciate finding this thread as it couldve been a lot worse for my daughter!

if it wasnt for the amazing mums on this thread , my daughter wouldve been left out without the appropriate care! I did demand an MRI for her spine and said to the doctors that it is Discitis!
They didnt think there was anything wrong with her spine but i said i wont let her go through the general sedation without scanning her spine! And they agreed.
I do have to say that, to be honest, the doctors have been listening! Its just took a bit more convincing! They knew my daughter had something more than an irritable hip and kept us in the hospital over night. They then asked for an emergency MRI this morning and added the spine in the last minute! They did think it could be bone marrow cancer but the blood tests never showed anything abnormal.
the doctor just came to say thanks for pointing them in the right direction! But i do have to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to all the mums for encouraging me to advocate for my daughter.
We will be staying in the hospital now for a while for the intravenous antibiotics. We are also waiting to hear back from GOSH about the course of treatment.
and finally, my husband now believes me and thinks i wasn't exaggerating...he also thinks now that i am a great mother and apologised...
please follow your instincts and what other parents say and dont be scared in requesting what you need to be done with your children from the doctors.

thanks again and i now hope my daughter will have a good recovery.
