Baby issues sleeping on back HELP

Hi all,
I’m currently dealing with my DH (3 months) who won’t be put down in her next to me crib to sleep, ever. She’s always hated it but we’ve been persevering.

However i’m wondering if it’s something other than just preference.

Once I set her down (when she’s asleep) she’ll do 30 mins tops, but most of the time nothing at all before she wakes up (I’ve tried her 7 times tonight!)
She tends to startle herself awake but then literally thrashes about. Pulling her legs up and basically fipping out a bit. She’s doesn’t really cry unless left a bit.

She also tends to fart 😅

Could it be that she’s uncomfortable with gas? When she sleeps on us she’s on her front, on our chest. With her knees pulled up, so wondering if then laying her down flat causes gas or reflux?

At a loss. And very sleep deprived so looking for reasons where they might not be any!

She’s fine on her back when being changed or playing on her mat 🤷‍♀️

Commenting to stay on thread. Sympathies for you OP. My. 3 ween old is very similar so I see this road ahead for me too

Neither of my son's stayed asleep on their back
They were reflux baby's.
I put them down on their side or their Tummys and kept a close eye on them

i feel for you. I had the same with mine. She couldn’t sleep on her back some days and one day I got so exhausted that I popped her on her front with her knees tucked up and she instantly dropped off. She started rolling not too long after so by that time I wasn’t too worried. I kept a close eye. You’re right to think about uncomfortable wind - maybe there is still some trapped there causing tummy trouble .

sounds like gas and maybe reflux,
I would do the baby bicycle legs and tummy rubs before sleep time to bring up the gas
you can elevate the cot mattress slightly on an incline so the head is higher than the feet
I put a flat pillow or sheets under the mattress

Thanks all, I sometimes feel like I’m clutching at straws and it’s just that she needs contact and I have to accept it but the way she behaves when she wakes make me think it’s something else.

I will try tonight to dislodge as much gas as we can and then maybe try to put her down on her belly. She feeds or rocks to sleep so not sure of the logistics but I’ll try!

have you tried swaddling?

thelma57 · 08/10/2023 11:15

She’s starting to roll now @HippeePrincess so I don’t think I can?

We would get baby to sleep then as we put them in moses basket or cot we'd gently turn them on to side. We definitely used hot water bottles to keep the basket cosy for when they were going in and I think I used to wedge a rolled up blanket behind them. And in the cot I think we'd take them from sleeping upwards on us and try to get as low to cot as possible and then just flip them round and onto their Tummys. First son loved a proper bum shake if he was getting disturbed. It takes a while to get it down to a T but you'll figure it out :D bums always up in the air!

Until they have good head strength you need to keep a close eye on them

Very much sounds like colic, my 2 kids had it. We called 5pm colic o'clock as suddenly you couldn't put lay them down, they were uncomfy + crying, full of wind all night. I spent hours with them sat up on my knees singing the grand old duke of york with actions with their legs to encourage wind.
Colief medicine really helped mine. If bottle fed, are they drinking quickly? If so, they may be taking into too much air with it. Try new bottle teats, not variable flow but perhaps medium to slow the intake. Take more breaks to wind whilst feeding too. Colic is exhausting, it feels never ending, but honestly it will suddenly ease just like the books say, although always a few days after you feel like you can't cope anymore.

Thanks @Hungrycaterpillarsmummy I might try next nap!

@MaggiePie36 shes EBF so not sure that’s causing it, but thanks for the tips cos looking at combi feeding soon!

Willing to try anything at this point! She’s never spent a night in her cot and I’ve never had the experience of putting my baby to bed 😭
