My 18 month old fell and hit his face on the corner of a bed this afternoon. It really didn't look like a bad fall but there was so much blood around his top teeth.

We calmed him down and cleaned him up, I've just checked his teeth and there's a bit of bruising and it looks like a hole in in superior labial frenulum (the skin connecting the top lip and gum).

I'm panicking we should take him to A&E but also think I'm over worrying!

How is he @rootsandwings89 ?

Ivebeentogeorgia · 08/10/2023 21:30

that looks sore. I would probably take him to a doctor tomorrow but can understand the worry. I hope he’s ok

I wouldn't go to A+E for that. Perhaps see the GP if you are concerned but I don't think they'll do anything.

My dd detached that whole area at 4yo. ...needed surgery. We got sent home the night it happened to return next day. Next day hospital were furious we had been sent home. Massive risk of infection with such an injury. Dd was gassed immediately and stitched up inside.. No scar at all.

My sisters 2.5yo did that yesterday, when I was with her. She rang her husband who is a high ranked nurse and he spoke to colleagues. They said no, just leave it alone, don't keep looking at it as you'll re-split it every time you try to see.

I would leave and watch. It looks like it was quite tight so he may have done himself a favour in the long term. My daughter had her a separated when she was a teen as sort of some dental work.

Hi. MaxFax and Paed Dentist here. If you take him - they won’t do anything. Intra-oral tears and lacerations heal very quickly. If was an extremely large tear with exposed tooth root/bone - would consider surgery. (Varies a lot between units as for infants, not a simple local anaesthetic and stitches, it would be a GA with obvious risks and downtime etc).

Could be trauma to the upper right first tooth, but even so, they won’t do anything right now as it won’t change. No signs of intrusion or extrusion . (Just check that the bite is still the same). Also remind your regular dentist to keep and eye on it and any issues when his permanent front tooth erupts (age 7+).

Openup · 08/10/2023 22:07

No I wouldn’t, but I’d probably ask the dentist to have a look in the next couple of days.

hellohelp · 08/10/2023 22:11

No I wouldn't. I'd give calpol and a bit of ice then hope it's not too swollen in the morning
