Advice for vomiting toddler - please help

Please bear with me, this may be a bit long winded but I am worried and am looking for reassurance or advice.

My daughter is 22months old and went down with what we thought to be a vomiting bug 8 days ago.
She stopped eating, minimal fluid intake and vomited a couple of times on the first day.
The next day was much the same, food refusal but taking on some fluids. Not as many wet nappies but still passing urine.
Come day 3 I called 111 for advice and they pointed me in the direction of a pharmacy for oral rehydration sachets.
That night she couldn't hold down water so I took her to A&E.
They gave an antisickness medication and said it was a virus and to go home.
The next 2 days were much the same, no food intake, some fluids including milk but still vomiting.
I took her to our GP along with a urine sample (as suggested by A&E) and she was diagnosed with a UTI and sent home with antibiotics and no examination.
This was on day 5.

She perked up a little but has still been refusing food and minimal fluids. Still vomiting.
Went back to the GP on day 6 explained the worries. She had lost alot of weight and wasn't eating still. GP again said viral, if worried go to A&E.
So I did.
Spent 5 hours with a vomiting child in paediatrics to be told again that it's viral and could go on 2 weeks or more.

Now, she hasn't eaten in 9 days. She will have the odd nibble on a dry cracker or a small bit of breadstick. She will take on some fluids. But that's it.
She has antisickness meds at home now but still vomits even with these in her system.

What am I doing wrong?
Has anyone experienced similar? I'm worried sick but feel fobbed off by everyone as I'm sure a virus doesn't make you vomit this long.
Can anyone advise at all?

@picturethispatsy so she seems quite bright this morning, but then she has started off bright every morning. She's managed to eat a few dry crackers, some wotsits and a little bit of scrambled egg then drank a 5oz bottle of milk. This us a big improvement from yesterday believe it or not. But I won't jinx things because she only starts vomiting in the evenings when she starts to get tired before bed.

As for her urine they ran a dipstick which was positive for leukocytes so have sent off a culture in the meantime. I know the dipsticks aren't accurate so have to wait for the full culture.

Sounds like dd when she has a urine infection, fever, vomiting, just be careful it doesn't go to her kidneys.

Trimethoprim doesn't work, take a urine sample into your GP and ask for any other antibiotic.

Hi can I ask what happened please, did you get a diagnosis? Is she okay now? 🤞🏻 I’m going through this with 15 month old DS and so worried. He’s also CMPA and it’s exactly as you describe - wakes up ok, goes downhill throughout the day, throws up in the afternoon/evening and has lost loads of weight.

RedHerring24 · 28/06/2024 21:48

@MaryMaryVeryContrary so sorry to hear your DS is going through similar.
We ended up with 3 hospital visits where we were just told viral and sent on our way.
GP saw us 3 times and on the 3rd occasion she had lost almost 2kgs. They still said viral but because we had been seen by so many people they offered to send us for a blood test.
We had this done and got a call literally the next day asking us to go in for an urgent GP appointment for an examination.
Her inflammatory markers were raised which they were concerned about as at the time she had a hole in her heart and there was a worry that it could be a cardiac related.

They didn't actually find anything wrong. No infection as such so no treatment.
She then just started eating again as though nothing had happened. It took a fair while for her to regain the lost weight and during this time she did look very thin.

It was all very weird and scary if I'm honest. But definitely visit your GP or A&E if worried. You are the only person who will advocate for your child is you, go with your instinct.
I hope your little one gets better soon!

Wotsits have milk in

RedHerring24 · 28/06/2024 22:19

@threePeartrees she had past this stage of the milk ladder and could tolerate things like wotsits and Quavers.
This wasn't related to the issue she had.

Oh how bizarre but so glad she’s okay and it wasn’t anything serious. Thanks for the update - really appreciate it.

I saw in an earlier post you said she was completely dairy free ? that was why I mentioned the wotsits containing milk

Sometimes if you’ve had a Stomach bug you can temporarily struggle with dairy so it could be that it’s an issue again till fully recovered

Sorry I’ve only just seen this is an old thread as well !

RedHerring24 · 28/06/2024 22:30

@threePeartrees it is an old thread which has resurfaced as someone else's child has had similar symptoms.
On the plus, my daughter completed the milk ladder, is no longer milk free and the hole in her heart has closed!
