headlice spreading like wildfire at school after 1
week back 🤦‍♀️
DD isn’t at all itchy so wouldn’t have crossed
my
mind but I noticed these in her hair - she has eczema so does get dandruff but having Googled have no way of working out whether these are eggs
or dandruff- can you advise?
keen not to use treatment unless I need to as it makes her exzema flare up 😢thank you!

I would say dandruff, if it is then it will come of easily but eggs stick.

Thank you!

If it just brushes off with a sweep of your hand it's dandruff. Eggs will be firmly glued on and will come off only with a nit comb or dragging your fingernails down the hair shaft.

mrsfollowill · 15/09/2023 22:10

Sorry I'd say headlice- what does the nape of her neck look like?

Sotired22 · 15/09/2023 22:11

Hard to tell but the best thing to do is get a nit comb, cover her hair in conditioner and comb through, wiping the comb on some kitchen roll after each stroke. Go all the way round her head in sections. If she’s got lice you’ll see them on the kitchen roll. No chemical treatments required, just do the combing every few days if she has got them until they’re all gone.

Check the hair behind the ears

ShineBright1209 · 15/09/2023 22:13

I’d say dandruff. I suffer with a dry scalp and so does my dd, this is what my dds looks like and it’s certainly not headlice with her. I used to get so paranoid about it I would stand for hours going through her hair and would find nothing.

nape
of
neck looks ok as does behind ears- sorry
for
silly Question but what do lice look like on a
comb?

You’ll know when you see a louse. It’s like a tiny fruit fly or the bigger ones are like small ants

MoorlandWanderer · 15/09/2023 22:17

Looks like dandruff to me. I might be imagining things in that pic but it looks like her scalp has dry skin on it too.

ItsAStupidQuestion · 15/09/2023 22:17

They look like this, the conditioner will coat the hair and make it too slippery for them to hold on. The cheaper, the better 👍

They are like a tiny greenfly but grey and no wings.
They often lurk behind ears.
Nits will be firmly glued to an individual hair.
Dandruff will brush off.

Jesusmaryjosephandtheweedon · 15/09/2023 22:19

You have to comb through it with the fine tooth comb. It's the only way to find them. You'll.know if you see one. They will be brown/black on the kitchen roll. One week back and all 3 of mine have them. Ffs.

ManyATrueWord · 15/09/2023 22:36

To test, hold your head over a dry bath, comb into the bath. Run your finger over the dust in the bottom of the bath. Headline eggs are bigger than dandruff usually. Also if you look and your finger and there are black or brown dots it may be lice. I dry comb with a Nutty Gritty if I suspect headlice.

theveryhungrybum · 15/09/2023 23:04

Never had lice until my youngest was 10 (eldest was 16) and youngest complained of an itchy head. Years of checking when school sent home letters about lice going around, but I never knew what I was looking for. My sister assured me that if I ever saw lice, I would know exactly what I was looking at. She described them as tiny lobsters. When I looked at DS10's head and saw just one louse, there was no shadow of doubt, I knew what it was! The eggs are harder, I've known a few people who have initially discounted eggs as dandruff. The difference is that you can pull dandruff off the hair shaft, you can't pull lice eggs off, they are stuck fast.
Good luck!
