Should I give my child vitamin d supplements? (Outdoorsy kid)

My child is very outdoorsy, and I’d say is out in the sunshine for at least 3 hours every day if not more (and much more some days).

I have sporadically given them vitamins over the years, but starting to feel guilty that I haven’t done it enough or well! So considering buying some omega 3, vit D and a general supplement. But it’s getting pricey. So wondering if they actually need the Vit D!

I don't think you need to give separate vit d. There should be some in the multi anyway. A good probiotic would be more useful I think.

In my understanding everyone at our northerly latitude needs Vit D supplements. But it should be in the general supplement. If you have to choose I would prioritise the Vit D over everything else.

Gosh hadn’t even thought about a probiotic! Now that ramps it up a bit more!

But now that I’m looking, you’re right - the multi I’m looking at does have vit D in it! It’s this one: https://www.wildnutrition.com/products/food-grown-daily-multi-nutrient-child?variant=42680488100029

I know not all Multis are equal, so I was looking for something really high quality but it’s expensive!

Everyone in the U.K. needs vit D supplementation from September to March regardless of how much time they spend outside because the sun just isn’t strong enough

Looks good!
Though I did their test and it asked how I identify rather than my sex, which makes me question their understanding of human bodies

I'm vitamin D deficient, found out in my 3 monthly blood tests. Doc just said to take a multivitamin and that will be plenty.

GreyBlackBay · 13/09/2023 14:46

I'm vit d deficient was already taking a pretty decent multi vitamins. A standard multivitamin Vit d dose is about 400iu and it did nothing.

I now take a liquid one 10,000iu and I'm finally simply low in vit d (although I wonder how much if that is time of year and making damn sure I go out in the sun).

From what I've read supplements are supposed to be enough to stop you dying of a lack of a vitamin but that's about it. Vitamins in food usually occur alongside something that helps you absorb it, vitamin d is fat soluble so whole milk is a decent source.
