DS age 13 hurt his neck in a scrum at rugby today in school. He can walk about ok but his neck is in real pain and he is limiting his movement when he tries to turn his head to the side.
I presume it's just soft tissue injury but obviously I'm worried about paralysis/spinal cord injuries. Would he not be able to move straight away if he had done major damage does anyone know or could it be delayed?
My gut instinct tells me he's fine and I would rather not go and spend hours in A&E if I don't have to. But obviously I will do this if needed.
Thanks

I hope he's ok. Highly likely you're right but best to check.

Rugby needs to go the same way as boxing, private clubs only. It's an inappropriate sport for compulsory PE.

I thought rugby could only be taught at school by people who have a proper rugby coaching qualification? And they should certainly be hot on treatment for head and neck injuries

IMO it doesn't change the principle - whoever teaches it, rugby is an inappropriate activity for compulsory PE.

Personal choice/clubs - fine.
Requirement to tackle/scrum in a compulsory PE lesson - not fine.

Tag rugby is ok for PE.

I agree. It certainly shouldn’t be compulsory but if contact is offered as an extra curricular it should be taught by rugby specialists

I wouldn’t let my son participate if it wasn’t ( he’s not at secondary school yet but plays for a club)

To be honest I'm not really sure of the set up regarding first aiders etc at school. It's a private school that is into rugby in a big way so I would imagine that it has lots of rugby specialists.
When my DS hurt his neck it was at training and not a match. He tells me that there's only first aiders at matches.
He really, really loves rugby so I don't think I can tell him not to play it-he'd be the only one out of his friends not playing and he'd be fuming.
I guess he could hurt himself riding a bike or on a trampoline. Rugby keeps him fit and he loves it.
