Dd has annual eye tests, currently has perfect vision. She's recently started secondary and is struggling to read the board.

She says sometimes the projected images are just too small, and the teachers are in the main happy for her to move to the front (apart from one who said no). She also said she's struggling with coloured text on coloured background, again, when projected onto the board from a laptop.

Is there something else going on here that a standard eye test wouldn't pick up?

When was her last eye test?

sounds as if she’s just gone a little short sighted (myopic) in the gap between tests.

call up and explain she’s having problems seeing distance and they’ll re-test her.

In the summer holidays. Its odd as she can see things far away at home, I do think it's to do with the colours on the board and not being able to properly distinguish the words on the board.

I'll book her for another exam.

It could also be that the teachers haven't considered the sunlight on the board and it's just not visually very good in bright conditions.

When you do have the check get the optometrist to check for divergence excess (a muscles imbalance which is worse in the distance especially when its bright).

You mentioned coloured text on coloured background.

Has she been tested for colour blindness?

My DH is colour blind and wouldn't be able to see e.g. Red on green or green on brown.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/09/2023 22:45

No she hasn't- she specifically said the yellow text on brown background was impossible to read, is that a combo which would indicate colourblindness?

It's pretty poor contrast (yellow on brown) .

I went for years with an astigmatism being missed. It's hard to notice yhat you have it because everything is equally fuzzy. That said, modern equipment should pick it up.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/09/2023 22:51

I'll contact Specasvers and see if I can book a test specifically for colourblindness then

OP - that wouldn't be an indication of colour blindness as they're part of the same spectrum and it's also very unusual for females to be colour blind. Her father and your father would have to be colour blind in order for her to be.

Similar colours have reduced contrast, which makes then harder to see.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/09/2023 08:49

So how do I tackle it?

Just do what I said previously, call up and say that you know she's been tested recently, but that she's having problems seeing the board. They will then re-test her.

Even a small prescription can make a difference when the contrast isn't very good.
