Fractured collarbone

DS, 6, has fractured his clavicle. The doctor said that it should be healed in about 7-10 days (fully better in 4ish weeks) and so long as he doesn't do anything too much on it then he doesn't need a sling and should be fine with some Calpol for a few days. Fortunately it's his left arm so he's able to do a lot of his usual things but since telling family every single person has asked if he can go back to school. I never even questioned this. Obviously I'll keep an eye on his pain tonight and see how he is in the morning but I didn't even think twice about sending him if he's okay. I will say to his teacher that he can't do PE at least for a couple of weeks but surely he can go to school, no?

Hello OP. My DD (6) did this a few weeks ago and she absolutely went to school - she loved all the attention 😉 She couldn’t wear proper uniform so I just put her in a vest top (easy to step into and pull up) and skirt. No PE or sports lessons for 6 weeks I was told, however she did PE last week, just more carefully. She’s still in the sling 2 weeks post-accident but I think another 5ish days and it will be coming off permanently.

Doctor didn't even give us a sling! DS has a really good range of movement all things considered so the doctor said it would be better to allow him to move it a bit and not restrict it to the sling. I'm going to say no to PE for 2-4 weeks unless it's contact in which case it'll be 6 weeks, as per the info we were given. He's going to be devastated that he can't do karate.

I also feel terrible as it's his best friend's birthday party this weekend, complete with bouncy castle that he now can't go on! I haven't broken the news to him yet but he's going to be so upset. Worst timing.

Ah that’s a shame about the party. DD told me “I’m missing out on all the fun and I’m lonely sat on my own” after her first day back at school. All forgotten now. Kids are remarkably resilient.
