GP appt tomorrow with teen DD. What do we ask for next for her acne?

Saw GP 2 months ago and DD was prescribed mercilon contraceptive pill for both her heavy periods and her acne. Also got given Duac gel.

DD also uses Purefide daily cleanser.

Periods have improved but acne hasn't.

We're back for review tomorrow. Will obvs follow GP's lead but just wondering what she might prescribe next for DD for the acne? Or if anyone has any tips based on their own teens experiences?

Thanks.

DD had quite bad cystic acne. Red, raw skin, bleeding, and scars. She started Marvelon, but got very depressed, then moved into Yasmin, which is more expensive, so not first go to. Insist if you want it. That really really helped.

However, what additionally helped for DD was cutting out all the skincare products which are promoted/suggested for bad skin. Everything was irritating and inflaming her already damaged, reactive skin.

She cut out everything and anything with alcohol, all the acids, perfumes, additives. Even in her shampoo/conditioner. We binned so many bottles, lotions and potions. She sought out products with minimal ingredients, and natural based.

She also ditched all the make up she was using to conceal the acne.

She also concentrated in good food, lots of water, and exercise.

Antibiotics would have been next step, but she didn't need them, and she wasn't indicated for Roaccutane because of mental health issues.

Now her skin is glowing. The odd faint scar remains, but she doesn't need make-up, and still sticks to basic natural low ingredients skin care.

@LaRevolution thank you I appreciate what you've said.
I think I will forget Thyme Out, I just wondered if anyone had had success with it as it was recommended on here and had good reviews.
My sons acne is fairly recent and isn't severe or cystic. I suspect it might be due him growing facial hair as he hasn't had any problems with his skin until now (late teens)
We've tried Cerave and some salicylic acid products but as we've had little success it's now time to try something else. Looking at the NHS guidelines I doubt he would reach the threshold for Roaccutane but no doctor would immediately put him on this anyway, and yes I will always be wary of anything with potential side effects, as any parent should be. Thanks again

@FunViolet I hope the treatment helps your DD, it sounds like you've got a good care plan moving forward. Good luck!

Ask the pill to be changed to dianette.
This pill was prescribed my acne, it literally changed my skin in 3 weeks as a teenager, can only stay on it two years but my skin had sorted itself out and was fine by then

@FunViolet just as a word of warning-use the epiduo quite sparingly-my boys had that (as well as the antibiotics) and it can burn the skin quite easily, so don’t use daily. It does help a bit though.

we are lucky as we have a GP at the surgery who specialises in skin and works patients through the protocol really well without fobbing you off. Acne can have such a mental health impact that it was worth it for us. All three of my DC will have been on roaccutane by the time we finish but it works so quickly it’s amazing. DS has only been in it for 4 days and his skin is dramatically clearer.

In an age of antibiotic resistance why are they still using them? When it will be a systemic treatment (unless it’s topical) I don’t understand why? There are effective treatments for acne (ultimately roaccutane) that avoid using antibiotics, crazy.

I had very bad acne and ultimately went on roaccutane at 16 and 23. I have been left with very bad scarring that probably would need laser treatment to sort out.
there were years on pills and gels and antibiotics and the whole time I was scarring….
I’m saving up money to take my own DD’d private if they have similar issues to me!

Good luck with the treatments.

We tried Yasmin pill, duac cream, different antibiotics including lymecycline. Nothing worked. We then paid privately for a dermatologist appointment where she got prescribed Tretinoin tablets. Her next appointments were via NHS. 6 months later and acne has gone - would ask for a dermatologist referral and see what they say.

Whendidigetsoold · 13/09/2023 11:39

Whoops I meant accutane tablets - it's me who uses Tretinoin cream!

Oral antibiotics worked for me as a teenager and for my two sons. It is almost impossible to get an NHS appointment with a dermatologist for teenage acne. We gave in and went private.
