Antibiotic spacing help

DS (4) has been prescribed amoxicillin twice a day for an infected finger. A&E sent me straight to the hospital pharmacy so he could get started on it straight away so he took a dose around 1pm.

Do I have to wake him at 1pm for the next one? Waiting till 7am seems too long for a rather nasty infection but his bedtime is presumably too early. I was flustered so didn’t think to ask the doctor or pharmacist.

Yes - they have to be taken every 12 hours. I wouldn't postpone the dose.

LeeMiller · 12/09/2023 14:58

any chance I can give it early? He’s slept all afternoon so could probably stay awake till 10pm? Or does it have to be evenly spaced?

Does the little pamphlet in the box say anything about missed doses?

dementedpixie · 12/09/2023 15:01

I would give before bed tbh
Then do the 2 doses more spaced out tomorrow

ManxRhyme · 12/09/2023 15:06

Is it definitely amoxillin OP as twice a day is an odd dose. It's usually three times a day.

dementedpixie · 12/09/2023 15:14

I googled it and it can be given twice a day too

LeeMiller · 12/09/2023 15:20

Its Augmentin which is amoxicillin, prescription just says 6ml morning and evening.

I wouldn't be waking my child up in the middle of the night. Give it as late as possible tonight and then tomorrow give it at a more convenient time to fit in 2 doses

Orangebadger · 12/09/2023 15:24

No give it before bed tonight then in the morning and 12 hours after that. That will be fine.

LeeMiller · 12/09/2023 15:27

This is my thinking.

he hates taking it so waking him up is not a great option unless it’s really necessary

What does he weigh OP? And what time does he go to bed and wake up usually?

One option could be that you delay bedtime dose for as long as is possible and give the (1am) dose earlier, then 12 hourly from then on. Call your pharmacy or GP and double check though please

I didn’t get an answer from the paediatrician and I couldn’t get hold of a pharmacist hence asking on mumsnet! We are overseas, it’s a local public holiday. I’ve also looked up the guidance for Augmentin.

Son is about 18kg, the dose and twice a day frequency (it just says morning and evening not 12 hours) were specified by the hospital paediatrician.

Son normally goes to bed around 9 but he napped all afternoon so I think might be awake till 10 or 10.30pm tonight and then will probably wake 7.30ish. I think we’ll give him the next dose just before bed if he goes to bed late, but if he goes to bed earlier then we will just wake him, I don’t think waiting till morning is a good plan.
