Severe overbite! Surgery?

Took my 12 year old to the dentist today for a check up. He still has quite a few baby teeth so isn't ready for braces yet however his teeth do stick out quite a bit which he is self conscious about. Dentist took an X-ray and told me he has a very severe overbite that will need to be treated sooner rather than later. He has referred me to the orthodontist but there's a 12 month waiting list so told me if he was in my shoes he would pay private to get this sorted! Otherwise he could need surgery down the line? I'm so shocked as to be honest I've never even noticed his teeth to be that bad.. has anyone any experience of this? Can they even do anything while he still has so many baby teeth?

We've had a lot of experience of this over past few years. I have an open bite, over jet and cross bite which apparently can only be sorted now with jaw surgery.

I noticed my DS was getting similar issues when he was 10, took him to ortho privately and told he'd need headgear and fixed braces but they wouldn't do anything til he was older.
I researched and found myofunctional therapy. He had tongue tie apparently which was a major cause alongside genetics. We did that therapy for a year, had tongue tie sorted, then arch expander for six months alongside use of a myobrace. Has been a long journey but results have been really good, he only has a small open bite now and overjet has massively reduced and is still reducing through ongoing use of a myobrace.

Definitely explore all the options available. I wish some of these things had been around when I was younger!

I'd contact the orthodontist direct, we were told a year waiting list (just over a year ago), had assessment at orthodontist over the summer and they say at least another 18months and then treatment would be teeth removal and braces. We're going to go private with a different orthodontist with either twin blocks and then bracers or a "herbst" appliance - decision to be made next week. Definitely not cheap, but don't want to miss utilising early teenage growth!

Worth visiting a couple of different orthodontists if you can to get options!
