Strange confusion and memory loss in DS

We experienced something really odd yesterday with my DS (11). He’d woken up ok - not too early and seemed in a good mood. Then later in the car was super sleepy. After that, at lunch time he started to seem a bit confused and out of sorts. He wasn’t joining in conversations and just seemed a bit zoned out. Later we played a card game and he was really confused about how to play and had forgotten the rules even though he’d played the same game the day before.

As the afternoon went on, I gently asked questions he should know the answer to, like the name of our street and our neighbour’s names. I was really worried but didn’t want to push him or freak him out. There were lots of other small examples throughout the day. He brightened up a bit later in the day but still seemed not quite himself and was saying a few odd things. I’m going to see how he is today and probably call 111 but was just wondering if anyone had experienced anything like this.

I think you need to take him to your gp..111 isn't a bad shout if its actively ongoing although I suspect they will say gp (don't quote me).

It sounds like my dh when he is having a seizure. He can be forgetful for a good while. Don't panic it may be a one off and can be caused by all sorts of things, including very minor. My dh's seizures happen rarely. It may not be the same thing and I'm not a doctor.
It is worrying when it happens but has always been OK.
Try not to worry and get a gp appointment.

I'd be going to A&E personally. Very worrying.

Heybearu · 02/09/2023 07:42

A and E would be good to get him monitored.

Autieangel · 02/09/2023 07:48

It could be a seizure. I would go a&e.

Wiii · 02/09/2023 07:51

Yep. A&E for me too.

xyz111 · 02/09/2023 07:58

I'd go to A&E. don't leave these things too long!!

Songbird74 · 02/09/2023 10:37

How is he today @icantlivewithouttea? I would echo the sentiments of the PPs and go to A&E if he is still not right. Hopefully it’s nothing and was a one off x

RedDoughnut · 02/09/2023 11:42

Has he been complaining about any headaches, eyesight issues?

My first thought was absence seizures but in your shoes I'd get things checked.

Hellocatshome · 02/09/2023 11:45

How is he today? Could be absence seizures. Could be just a virus or something much worse. I would be tempted with A&E to be honest and ai normally would go near A&E unless a body part was hanging off.

hopeishere · 02/09/2023 11:47

I would get this addressed asap. Definitely no blows to the head or anything? Any older siblings who might have left "stuff" lying about?

Cowlover89 · 02/09/2023 11:55

Definitely go to A&E x

Yep, same as my DP before/after a seizure. Whatever the reason for it is, it doesn't sound normal so definitely needs checking out.

My friends child presented exactly like this totally out of the blue age 9. It was a form of epilepsy and sadly poverty total saw it escalate and he Ray struggles now. In your shoes I would 100% be going to a and e and questioning epilepsy and asking for a brain scan.

Exasperatednow · 02/09/2023 13:31

A&e won't do a brain scan. You need to see your gp and get a referral to a neurologist. Epilepsy (if it is that) is more often than not very manageable and children often out grow it.

A&e will do an initial neurological exam and unless their is an active seizure not much else. It may also not be epilepsy and it would be wise to go to the gp and get referred for more extensive examinations.

My experience with dh when he is in a post seizure state is that you hang around for a bit (blood pressure etc.) then you are sent home.

bluebellsanddaisies23 · 08/09/2023 13:05

How is your DS doing @icantlivewithouttea? I hope he hasn't had any more issues, but did you get to the bottom of what it was?

cottonwoolbrain · 08/09/2023 13:10

It sounds like me after an absence seizure. I would suggest he sees the GP. Obviously it could be other things but what you write seems to mirror my experiences pretty well.

I hope it's just a one off but I'd be inclined to put your concerns on record now in case it happens again. Flowers

cottonwoolbrain · 13/09/2023 11:58

@icantlivewithouttea How is he? Has it happened again?

I hope he's alright now and it was only a one off.
