Lower right hand stomach pain

My DD has been complaining of tummy pain for a few months now, its a very specific area she is having it on her lower right hand side.

The pain tends to come on very quickly and can last around 5/10 mins with her being unable to stand or focus, then it goes again. This can happen around twice a day at varying times so there doesn't seem to be any pattern.

She says it always feels tender/sore when pressed.

We have been to the GP and he is doing bloods however he didn't seem to be able to have a cause of what it could be.

DD has a really excellent varied diet and always eats well, she has no bowel issues and is regular. She also competes in a sport so is very fit active and healthy so we are really unsure.

Any ideas of next steps or anything i should ask doctor to test or look out for?

Appendicitis? I was diagnosed with a 'grumbling' appendix had it removed when I was about her age. Again, varied diet, ate well and was regular.

Thats never been mentioned but i have thought about it alot. I did always think appendicitis would just start ans get worse over hours/days as apposed to months

As far as I can remember it started slowly and was better some days than others. The doctor definitely pressed the area (remember it being really sore) as part of diagnosis and then saying they wanted to operate. Maybe these days they can scan to confirm/ rule out?

Hi @Toastiesforever my SIL (granted, she is 40!) had a grumbling appendix for months before it finally burst. She had the same symptoms as your DD - she went to the GP and was told it was nothing, she even passed out with the pain and had an ambulance come see her and A&E said it was just a stomach bug. She very nearly died with it. I would seek a second opinion.

Thankyou, I wonder if my daughters bloods will show up anything and if they would show appendicitis of some sort.

Can I just suggest you ask the GP to examine her back and feel her kidneys? My son had recurrent pain that left him rolling on the floor when he was little. He always said it was his stomach but when he was a teenager we discovered he had a serious kidney problem.

Twisted colon ?

Thankyou everyone, we have had the bloods and should get the results by the end of the week, hoping they show something and that its a simple treatment.

Ive really tried to pinpoint when the pains are coming but they appear to be very random, when they do come she crouches down and feels sick with the pain.

What i have noticed, which could be entirely normal, is when she eats she looks really bloated, like 4 months pregnant bloated, im unsure if this is because she quite literally has a 6 pack very toned abs because of her sport so when she eats the bloating just looks really prominent, it lasts maybe an hour but doesn't coincide with the pain.

Other than that though when the pain isnt there she appears very happy and healthy.

Hi OP, really random but I’m wondering if she has a food intolerence. What struck me is when you said she looks bloated - both my DC have coeliac disease and my daughter had awful stomach pains / issues and would look really bloated after eating (we didn’t realise she has coeliac until a blood test showed a TTGA level of 250). Is there coeliac in the family? How are her stools in general? Is she quite small for her age?

TheWayoftheLeaf · 04/09/2023 23:15

Could be IBS tbf. I also look pregnant after eating and get pain that makes me shiver and sweat in the same place. I also have a great diet - unfortunately that doesn't stop IBS which is most common in women.

But obviously get her checked for anything more sinister.

That is one of the blood tests shes getting so hopefully we will find out soon.

No shes really tall for her age and there is no coeliac or food intolerance in our families and her stools seem completely normal in every way.
