Possible diabetes- emergency?

Heidineedshelp · 29/08/2023 22:22

My 6 Yr old son has been going to the toilet a lot over last 24 hours. At times every 20 mins- that went on for several hours this morning mostly every few hours since then.

He's drinking a bit more than usual- not guzzling drinks but definitely drinking bit more. Woken up last few nights asking for water- doesn't usually do this.

Well in self. Wee looks normal. Says not in any pain. Eating normally.

We are on holiday in uk. Should I be driving to hospital in morning?

Many thanks.

Call 111 for advise?

BuffaloCauliflower · 29/08/2023 22:24

Yes. Absolutely better safe than sorry for this one, and there’s no time to waste if he has developed diabetes.

Switcher · 29/08/2023 22:24

No? I mean why not do the quiz in 111 online and see what they say but I can't really see the issue but it seems like you have some reason for jumping to diabetes.

ineedsomemoremetime · 29/08/2023 22:26

How is his eyesight? Is he struggling to focus? How about his weight - is he skinnier than normal? Does his breath smell like pear drops?

Spidey66 · 29/08/2023 22:26

I would tbh. Type 1 diabetes can make you very ill very quickly, especially kids. Unless (and I’m not sure if they can do it) you take him to a pharmacist and see if they can do a finger prick test? Anyway if they can’t they can advise you x

Bumblebee112 · 29/08/2023 22:30

I’d definitely call 111 for advice on this one @Heidineedshelp. It can’t hurt to check with them.

We actually had similar concerns about DS when he was about 2. GP surgery was open so I called them and they asked me to get a urine sample in as quickly as I could that day so that they could check protein levels. Doctor had called me within 15 mins of me leaving the surgery after handing in the sample so presumably they thought it important enough to act that quickly!

Popcorn640 · 29/08/2023 22:30

We ended up rushing DS to a&e essentially comatose because we didn't notice anything was wrong before then - looking back the symptoms were just as you describe (although had been going on longer than 24hr). It can and does become serious very rapidly!

GrazingSheep · 29/08/2023 22:33

Yes, go to hospital.
DD’s best friend presented with those symptoms and was very ill by the time she got to hospital.

LouLou198 · 29/08/2023 22:34

I would be getting medical advice tonight. Could possibly be something as simple of a urine infection, but could also be type 1 diabetes. 111 will be able to get you a GP appointment or advise you on the nearest A&E.
I know from personal experience that symptoms can come on quickly in children and they can get very unwell quickly.
I hope he is okay.

Focalpoint · 29/08/2023 22:36

My son has T1. He noticeably lost weight over 2 or 3 weeks, he was very tired/grumpy, was drinking loads and loads of water.

Get him a fingerprick test. I was also on holiday (in UK) and literally walked into a GP surgery with no appointment, told symptoms, a nurse gave him a fingerpick test and effectively diagnosed him within 5 minutes - and sent us to hospital.

WorseDecision · 29/08/2023 22:39

Yes go.

My 7 year old went into DKA in March and nearly died as a&e sent him home! Took him to his GP who did a urine sample and his ketones were ridiculously high. One more day and he'd of died.

Thirst, tiredness, weight loss, bed wetting, weeing lots, sickness, all signs.

berksandbeyond · 29/08/2023 22:42

Tonight, not tomorrow. If it’s DKA it could be deadly by morning

rainrainSummerornot · 30/08/2023 08:21

How did you get on? Hope all ok?

Remmy123 · 31/08/2023 07:27

My son had around a full day of wee'ing much more but no thirst but then it stopped - it is best to get checked out.

nocoolnamesleft · 31/08/2023 20:44

Really hoping you've got him checked out. You don't mess around with possible new onset diabetes in children, because they can fall off their perch so fast.

Spidey66 · 03/09/2023 12:43

@Heidineedshelp how is your son? I hope he's OK and that no news is good news xxx

RedHelenB · 03/09/2023 12:59

Could be a uti.

Heidineedshelp · 03/09/2023 20:05

Thanks all. Apologies for delay replying. It was a UTI. :-(. He got antibiotics and was on the mend pretty fast. I was worried about diabetes because we have a strong family history of diabetes. Thanks everyone.
