DS burn on arm on holiday

RhubarbAndMustard · 25/08/2023 18:33

We're half way through our holiday in Spain and DS (7) has burnt his arm on our travel iron. We put under cold water for 20 mins, gave calpol and he seems ok now he's over initial shock but any advice for next steps pls?

Do we cover or leave to be, see a dr or just get on with it? Also assuming swimming now out of the question..he'll be devastated.

How long after burn did you take this pic?
I think (but am not sure) the colour white after a burn isn’t great as it means it’s quite deep so I think you’ll need to get seen and a proper burns dressing put on 😢hope someone else come along to tell me I’m wrong. Poor all you, it’s so rubbish when something like this happens on your hols 😢xx

After the 20 mins of cold water. I was worried about that. He's mixed race so didn't know if that made a difference but Dr Google not helping much!

Ah ok maybe it’s the contrast in pic then?
I think I’d want it checked though as
its so white I’m concerned it’s fat
tissue which needs proper treatment 😢

Hoping that was 20 minutes of running water? Looks small but nasty. I'd be tempted to get it properly dressed. Especially as he's mixed race, so higher chance of keloid scarring.

I was told by our pharmacist that anything over 50p sized should have medical attention.

As you're abroad I'd say take him to a pharmacy for advice/dressings. I don't know about urgent care/walk in centre type places in Spain but the pharmacy will.

I'd take him to a pharmacy for advice. Certainly needs a proper dressing, and to keep the sun off it.
What would you have done if you were at home? It's no different to being away, do the same.

Thanks everyone. Luckily on-site dr was lurking in reception so we're waiting for it to be checked now.

I had a similar sized steam scald on holiday - it fucking hurt. A local private GP came to the hotel, cleaned it, dressed it and gave me an antibiotic cream to avoid infection. I think this needs checking out. You will also need to make sure it’s completely covered when he is out in the sun.

When we were in Croatia, DH cut his leg open. Local Dr told us to buy the waterproof dressings (cheap!) Chuck on and go swimming😁. We bought loads spare as you can't get them in the UK. Very handy and they worked. Went kayaking and all sorts. So it might be worth having a chat with the local pharmacy.

All ok, OP?

RhubarbAndMustard · 25/08/2023 20:15

All ok thanks. Dr cleaned it and put a dressing on. No pool for 2 days but said it's superficial so all good

Excellent. I had a clear silicone plaster to wear on a burn on my arm, similar size - it stopped the sun from marking it forever! Now completely gone. Available from most pharmacists.
