Someone please help!!!
Sorry may be long..
My daughter just turned 1, she's had constipation problems since 6 weeks old, after a lot of doctors appointments she's now on the powder "laxido" but wasn't working, she's having weird play-doh like poops, very hard and bright red bum, straining and screaming/crying when trying to do it, so the dose got upped today. I've been giving her a high in fibre diet, of the fibre foods I've read. But I need to know if there's any other ways I can help this constipation that worked for others? she's in agony and they need to be softer! I can't watch her like this😭
What can I do? What have others tried. Foods/tricks/drinks etc?
I'm totally lost and breaking my heart, she's in agony! I don't know what else to do for her😭

Glass of prune juice?

Constipation needs liquid to help a bowel movement.

Valerie23 · 24/08/2023 11:33

You can make prune juice ice lollies if you can't get her to drink enough.

EmptyTheFrickingBins · 24/08/2023 11:34

You may need to go low fibre until the constipation resolves - if she's not emptying, all the fibre is doing is adding to the poo blockage!

What does laxido is she taking?

kelsieWaterson · 24/08/2023 11:35

I was trying the Ellas Kitchen Prunes that she tried when she was younger as I couldn't get her to take the juice, even though she's on solids, this one only likes water, I'll deffo try the ice lollies though, I wouldn't have thought of that, thank you!! X

She was on 1 sachet a day from the paediatrician, but today GP told me she can have a sachet every 2 hours until she does the toilet.. hoping that helps, but nothing yet. She's got blood on her bum, it's horrific to watch, we've tried so much.
Em, I don't understand why try low fibre till it sorts itself out, I've been told high in fibre diet might help her, am I getting that wrong? Oh no😭

Suppository.

DS had an amazing one once which worked in 5-20 minutes according to the packet. Within 3 minutes he was on the loo!!!!

Was prescribed by Dr.

He regularly has problems - needs to drink a LOT of water, eat apple puree and drink some apple juice.

A teaspoon of olive oil and a squeeze of lemon juice from an actual lemon first thing in the morning on an empty stomach will help for the future.

Meanwhile what position is she in when she is toileting?

If you can get her to squat so that her knees are facing upwards that naturally opens up the bottom hole (sorry) and may help her to go.

I've always found pear juice to be far better than prunes for resolving constipation.

Piggyplate · 24/08/2023 11:53

Peaches and pears make a smoothie or make ice pops. I swear by this combo. I know she's only little but how much milk does she still have? My wee one if he has more than 3 cups of milk in a day he struggles too. Just a thought.

Piggyplate · 24/08/2023 11:54

Also pineapple can help too. Pretty much any fruit that begins with a p funny enough

All high fibre is doing at the moment is adding more bulk to her poo and making it more solid. Try low fibre for a bit until the impaction passes and then slowly add it back in. You may need to use a much higher dose of the laxido too.

dandeliontea78 · 24/08/2023 16:00

Suppositories. They help from the bottom end while the laxido helps from the top.
And lots of water

SlowlyLosing · 24/08/2023 16:05

Mine s like this at a very young age. We found a bath worked pretty much very time.

Anything you feed might produce more gas and cause more pain. Have you spoken to your pharmacist? Suppositories now then tons of fibre, fluids, regular movement and warm baths should help to keep him clear.

Poor mite. Mine got better around 2.

peachgreen · 24/08/2023 16:08

Suppository, loads of liquids, persevere with the Laxido. It's the WORST. DD's totally resolved once she was toilet trained, thank goodness.

PoppityBoo · 24/08/2023 16:16

Movicol saved us. Great stuff.

SpamIAm · 24/08/2023 16:22

Oranges or clementines or anything like that always worked well for mine. Lots of fluids. No bananas or eggs.

I assume fibre should be soluble? But I'm just speaking from my own experiences of IBS rather than constipation in a baby - my little one's was resolved with movicol thankfully.
