Asthma question

My 6yo son is high risk for asthma: multiple anaphylactic allergies and eczema from birth. He has often had a cough at night, but has never wheezed/isn't out of breath from exercise (and he does a lot of activity), so I have never worried too much about it. However, recently, his cough at night was so terrible, as in, just relentless, and he has been complaining of tummy pains, which I read is a common complaint in children with asthma. He doesn't have a cold. I took him to the GP and she has given him a preventer inhaler to use twice a day for a month, after which she will review him. She said it may take 2 weeks to take effect. He's used it for one day and his cough has completely disappeared. Does this mean it is more or less likely to be asthma? I'm confused! Obviously will discuss with GP when I go back. I have always worried about him developing asthma as it increases his risk if he experiences anaphylaxis, so would be very relieved if it sounds like it's 'just a cough'.

Can anyone who has a child with asthma shed some light?

Asthma is not to be messed with. It can be set off by all sorts of triggers.

Do you have any pets? Unfortunately animals are a complete no-no for children with asthma. If you have any, you will have to re-home.

Keep your home as dust-free as possible. Hard-flooring rather than carpets. No unnecessary soft-furnishings.

Use non-bio washing detergent and keep things scrupulously clean.

Keep a close eye on your son and keep a diary of any asthma symptoms - coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, or generally quiet and tired. You can pick up one of those finger monitors that indicates oxygen saturation and check that regularly too.

Thanks all. Yes, he has cat and dog allergies alongside multiple food ones. No dustmite allergy though. Already use non-bio and have decent air purifiers in every room. I more wanted to know if the fact the preventer inhaler has worked so quickly, suggests asthma is the problem, or it is less likely to be asthma, since cough has disappeared almost immediately. If that makes sense!
