Is this graze infected? (Pic)

Hi there
My DS (10) had a gnarly crash on his mountain bike just over 48 hours ago. He bashed his leg and took a layer of skin off his knee, about the size of a 50p.
He’s saying it’s getting more painful, tingling and stinging, and I noticed the red skin around it and wondered if it could be infected? It’s not weeping.
He’s my second DS so you’d think I’d know about knee grazes but I’m second guessing myself.
He has ADHD and severe anxiety so hasn’t let us dress it or put antiseptic on it at all but it was wiped as soon as it happened.
I’ve drawn dots around the red perimeter to check for spread tomorrow… Any other advice?

It looks ok to me.
Not overly swollen, no signs of pus.
Looks like a decent scan, just try and keep dry and don't let him pick it!

Check if it feels warmer than the rest of his leg.

It looks like a perfectly normal graze to me. A gel blister plaster over it may provide more comfort if it's drying out and pulling.

It’ll be the scab shrinking as it dries that’s making it feel so sore and redden around the edges. I always used Vaseline on that sort of deep scab on mobile skin, helps keep it supple enough that it doesn’t pull, split and bleed. Hopefully you can persuade DC to give it a try. It doesn’t sting in the slightest

Looks OK.

Will he sit in a bath? A nice warm bath with slatw in it maybe?

I’ve got a similar graze after falling off my bike on Friday- it’s really sore - I’ve tried moisturising the scab to stop it contracting too much but not found anything to work yet plus the whole area is really stingy still! Your son has my utmost sympathy - I’m 54!!!! X I’m trying teatree cream next but if I could find some Nelson’s calendula
cream i would use that

Thanks all - he won’t get in the bath but he may agree to have Vaseline around it…

Those dressings look good but he won’t let us put anything on. He’s traumatised from years ago when we put a dressing on a big scrape (you can see the scars just above his new graze) and it stuck to the wound and we had to pull it off which reopened it… it’s hard when you have a patient who won’t let you nurse them!

Wish me luck!
