DD headaches

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has some input. DD 9 has been having headaches since June. They used to be once a week now everyday. They only come on for 10 minutes per day or maximum 45 mins then go away. Not really bothering her but I do worry as she gets headaches when she goes on any sort of ride or swing. GP said to make a headache diary and keep an eye on it and go back soon. Has anyone been through anything similar ?

We're currently awaiting referral for my DD13 she has been getting thunderclap headaches, she also has history of childhood migraine (since age 3, now rarely has those) We only saw doctor once for it, we're told probably nothing to worry about that Its more than likely hormone or stress related but a referral has to be made.
I assume you have taken her to opticians to get checked? If you're concerned can you see a different doctor within the practice to get a second opinion?

Hi OP, when my DC developed headaches (ages 3 and 6ish) I was referred to a paediatrician. I would ask the same for your Dad. Does she feel nauseous with them? Any change in behaviour? Are they worse in the morning? These are red flags and need urgent investigation.

Also, pop to your opticians and ask them to check her eyes. They can see if there is any pressure behind her eyes. Sometimes it can be that a child needs glasses (this was the case with my niece). I would definitely go to the GP again and ask for a second opinion.

I assume you've had her eyes tested?

I'd also wonder if it started round a time she was ill. Covid can do that, but my ds had headaches for 2-3 years after he had a bad bout of tonsillitis which went into a post viral illness that lasted some time.

Thanks for the replies. Her headaches got a little worse and she started to feel dizzy so my GP said he would refer her to to the paediatrician and then they would decide what to do. However I am a a bit anxious and don't like taking risks with children so I have booked her an appointment with the neurologist tomorrow. Is this an overreaction? Apart from a little dizzy and more frequent she hasn't got more symptoms and still only during the day headaches not morning apart from 2 times. Let's see what they say I have booked the appointment tomorrow.

Good luck, OP. Let us know what they say. Hope all is OK x

So the neurologist said she should have a scan just for safely but he thinks she's most likely okay. He said he can't say 100 percent so it's something to consider. Have booked it for Thursday. I think it's soon but I'd rather have answers sooner. She's had her eyes tested so no issues there. Thanks everyone.

My DS used to get headaches in the summer. He had an mri and it turned out to be sinisitus caused by hayfever! Sinisitus is really different to diagnose in children.
It took two lots of antibiotics to shift it.
When he started getting headaches again the gp said no sign of sinisitus but i pointed out it took an mri to diagnose last time and he finally got antibiotics.

The fact your DD gets headaches with movement is indicative of sinus pain, so may be worth looking into that

Just to let everyone know everything was fine on DD's MRI. She still gets the odd headache but scan was normal and neuro said to cut out processed food and sugary drinks, cheese and some other things that I noted down! Thing is she is a good eater and hardly has these but will follow orders. I also think she was overthinking it a bit too. When she has a headache now I'll try and distract her.

Thanks everyone Smile
