Dds eye swelling pic warning

We are waiting in a call back from 111 before anyone says and they're calling back within an hour

Dd was sat on the sofa with one of the cats who we've had longer than she's been alive.
About 10 minutes after he got up she said her face was itchy so gave piriton and made her wash face and hands
10 minutes after that I checked her and the eye ball looks swollen and weirdly pink/milky not like a normal allergic reaction and it seems to have swollen around the cornea with lumpy bits

Iv given her an ice pack and piriton was administered 40 minutes ago and it's no better

I'm guessing the cat caused it but what on earth is happening to her eye?

I've had that reaction with bad hayfever. The eye seems to create this kind of jelly layer and the white of the eye gets swollen.

Do you have an eyewash or can you get to a pharmacy and get some eye drops to dilute whatever has caused the reaction?

Missingmyusername · 17/08/2023 20:06

Does the white part look like jelly? That used to happen to me around my pet cat. Probably touched kitty then rubbed the eye, just an allergic reaction. Try not to rub, it’ll calm down soon.

I still can’t touch a cat and then my face! Always wash hands after playing or touching the cat.

Fieldings15 · 17/08/2023 20:06

I’m guessing some kind of allergic reaction, I’ve had something similar before where I’ve had hives on my eyelid and the eye itself has gone very red and itchy (but not bumpy I don’t think). I have to be careful around our cat now, if I rub my eyes after stroking her it can set it off. Normally goes away on its own after an hour or so though. I hope you get some good advice from 111 and that it’s not too itchy or painful.

Firefighter22 · 17/08/2023 20:08

I get the same weird film across my eye if I touch a cat then my eye. It would feel really odd and gradually wear off. I think because this is a young child and if it’s not improving after piriton etc , and if there’s any swelling around or under the eye, I’d be tempted to phone 111 for advice. Hope it starts to subside soon. That extra filmy thing used to take a good few hours when I had it.

Firefighter22 · 17/08/2023 20:09

Jelly layer is a perfect description. I used to call it my alien eye

RockSocks · 17/08/2023 20:11

We've washed her face a few times now, it's not getting worse but not better still lumpy have given it a wash but not a proper eye bath she wouldn't tolerate that she's still hugging the ice pack to her face though

I have horrific allergies to pollen and other things and never had my eye go like this but I'm reassured to hear its happened to others

It's becuse it lookes like its bulging that has me so panicked I'm hoping they call me back soon I have 20 minutes till the hour is up

Yes, it’s just conjunctiva chemosis (swelling) it looks awful, but isn’t serious.
you did the right thing with piriton - cool compresses also help. I

Moonberri · 17/08/2023 20:18

The jelly things does look awful but it's just the eye protecting itself. I get it on and off for 3 months during tree pollen hayfever season so have got used to it!

McConkeysPlate · 17/08/2023 20:19

My daughter had this across half her eye from rubbing it too hard. We used a cold compress and it was gone within a day or so.

McConkeysPlate · 17/08/2023 20:22

Chemosis I think it’s called when it’s caused by irritation

Firefighter22 · 17/08/2023 20:25

I’m sorry, I didn’t see you’d already phoned 111 or I’d obviously not have suggested it. I’ve never known anyone else get this weird jelly thing. I thought it was maybe just me. Glad to know it’s not unusual and hope that’s reassuring you a bit OP too. Hope 111 ring soon . They will hopefully know anything you should look out for, but you’ve done the best thing with piriton and the ice pack.

This happens to me with my allergy. Check her chest and neck to see if she has redness.

Last time it happened I had steroids from minor injuries.

madeinmanc · 17/08/2023 20:42

Having said that I don't want to worry you, I think I had the steroids because I had red facial and neck rash as well as the eyeball swelling.

madeinmanc · 17/08/2023 20:43

Did you give piriton? Not piriteze? Just checking because they are two different drugs.

RockSocks · 17/08/2023 21:14

@madeinmanc definitely piriton which she has prescribed due to a egg allergy from when she was little and is growing out of very quickly

111 called back the eye has finally reduced it's swelling and jelly like consistency not much but enough I'm no longer panicking, the Dr was happy for her to stay home and monitor if I call back they will give her Steroids and have been told to keep piriton up for two to three days
It's still very red and sore but she's asleep now

It's a bit upsetting she loves that cat and he has only just taken to her, he's not a fan of small loud children I was hoping she could get in lots of cuddles over the next year as he's old and poorly
The only bonus is he's not bothered about going upstairs so never on her bedding though I stripped it just incase

Aww, bless her 🥺 Hope she feels better soon, I think allergies can frazzle you what with having the reaction and then the medication and so on. Good thing you had Piriton on hand.

I wonder why that would happen suddenly, maybe there was another trigger.

Firefighter22 · 17/08/2023 23:33

I hope DD wakes up with her eye looking and feeling a lot better. If she’s been ok around the cat up to now it could be that as long as she doesn’t stroke/touch him and then touch her eyes, she will be ok around him otherwise. That’s certainly what I find. I’m fine with most cats but absolutely not if I touch my eyes after stroking them . Then I get the whole jelly film, itchy red eye thing which can take a good 6+ hours to start wearing off.
