Tonsillitis - 5 days on antibiotics still got temp

My DS was given penicillin antibiotics Saturday morning for bacterial tonsillitis, was going downhill so took him the GP Monday who said them antibiotics hadn't worked and changed them.

We have now had 3 full days of the new antibiotics and I took him back the GP today as they wanted to check for Quincy. She said his tonsils are still swollen and white , but because he seemed okay in himself she wasn't worried. His temp coming to bed was 38.7 I've just given him some Calpol so should hopefully come down. But how long should this go on for ? Im worried these antibiotics might not be working.

I am dealing with recurrent tonsillitis here with my DD so can hopefully be of some help💞
have they swabbed his throat? If not request this to check what strain of bacteria it is (if any as could yet be viral) thus will then indicate what antibiotics are needed.
if he’s ok in himself that’s hugely reassuring. As his his temp responding to calpol. Good luck and hope he feels better soon, it’s miserable xx

@wobblymum1 thank you. No they haven't swabbed this throat, I will suggest that if it gets no better, I'm just not sure how long it should take him to get better on antibiotics. It's horrible isn't it x

I’d say 3 days and you should be seeing an improvement. If not push for a swab (easily done but for some reason we always need to ask for it!) and that can clarify the infection strain and what antibiotic will work (or if it’s viral in which case you just need to let him rest and it could be 7-10 days. But general rule of thumb is 3 days and you should see a good improvement, sending all my hugs as it’s so horrible not knowing what to do xx

It might be what they had going around in the nursery here in end of June. My DD got high fever for days and turned out to have to tonsillitis with high fever for days even though on antibiotics. It took ages to get better. I know it was going around as the nursery sent a message asking parents not to bring sick kids in as now lots of kids were sick.

My son was like this last summer (and me too). It was strep throat. Hope it's better soon x

Squishmallowy · 16/08/2023 22:16

My dc had a five day course and it wasn’t enough he needed ten days

Olika · 16/08/2023 22:24

Yes 10 days for my DD as well

Wishingforthesunn · 16/08/2023 23:35

Thanks everyone he's on a 10 day course, but in total will have been on antibiotics 12 days because we had them swapped, so 5 days so far. Hopefully he will turn a corner soon x

Yes they should do this to ensure it's the correct antibiotics

Wishingforthesunn · 17/08/2023 02:35

I've just checked his temp and it's 35.4 which Google says is bad. He is cold as won't sleep with blanket etc on and window is open hoping it's that.

I'd call 111 now with that drop in temp.

Insheerpanic · 17/08/2023 02:42

If that temp is accurate could be sign of sepsis. Has he been drinking fluid? Is he weeing? Has he been acting dazed at all? Are his hands and feet freezing? Get your torch out or turn light on look at his skin is it grey/purple or mottled or does he have a pin prick rash? Can you wake him? Does he respond? Sorry for OTT and worry but I'd be rechecking temp and checking for any other signs and acting on it, dont mean to worry you but better safe than sorry x

Wishingforthesunn · 17/08/2023 02:53

He's been drinking all day and had 6 wees yesterday and a poo. The GP seen him at 4:15 and wasn't worried. He was quite bright last night I took him on a walk he was playing etc . Then his temp cam back.

I haven't tried to fully wake him but if I put the thermometer in his ear he tries to hit it away and moves and if I move in the bed it disturbs him as he moves about. Hands/feet feel normal temp , breathing seems fine , skin looks a normal colour/no rash. I've put a duvet on him , I'm going to give 111 a call now.

That's all good! Hope he's ok xx

Wishingforthesunn · 18/08/2023 16:55

Thank you , he's on the mend now. I spoke to a GP in the middle of the night , and they said sometimes it does lower the same way it does when have a high temp . But as long as he is fine in other ways not to worry x
