12 year old painful breast lump

Just that really - the one breast she thinks has swollen slightly, feels very sore and seems to have a lump behind the nipple that has slightly inverted. I’m panicking and trying not to diagnose over the internet…she says she feels slightly ill, off her food and a bit off, almost like mastitis?!

You can get non-breastfeeding mastitis (I can’t recall the actual name for it) - I had this and it was soooo painful! I waited a few days to go to the docs and I was very much told off by the doctor! I would call 111 for advice. Does she feel hot / feverish? Can you feel the lump? Mine came on suddenly and needed antibiotics to clear

I remember when my breasts were growing 10-12 years old I had very painful lumps behind my nipples on and off. I was very anxious but then my mum told me that what it was. Maybe it’s a growth pain as well. Best to check with your doctor.

Yes there’s a significant lump that’s not evident in the other breast. I don’t remember this at all growing up so was worried it wasn’t right, thank you I’ll call 111

How are you getting on?

I think it must be hormones/growing pains - there’s no rash, she’s not complaining of pain now, it seems to have gone on it’s own after 3/4 days. I just panicked when she said there’s a lump, silly really but I’d not heard of it happening before!

Probably breast buds. Mine were really sore when I was growing.

When I was about 14, I had a lump on my breast and obviously alarm bells rang, always fearing the worst. But went to GP and was assured that it was just an overactive milk gland and that it will go down in a few days. Apparently very common among developing young ladies. A very strange solution - all I was told to do was to wear my bra tight (minimiser bra comes to mind)... this was 40 years ago so don't know if they would offer such advice nowadays!! But the lump did vanish within about a week.
