Recurrent Tonsillitis

Hi I don't often post but I am at my wits end. My daughter (6) had a bad bout of tonsillitis around a month ago and now every time she completes a course of antibiotics it returns a few days later. The antibiotics are upsetting her tummy now she seems so low and I'm desperately worried. We have been referred to ENT but appointment not for a couple of weeks. Has anyone experienced anything similar with their child?

I didn’t know that about the enamel- that’s interesting. My daughter has weak enamel on her teeth, I wonder if that could be the cause.

Agreed - my daughter too.

@peeinthepool good luck for the private appointment and please do report back if you don’t mind! Sounds like lots of us have been struggling with this :(

peeinthepool · 15/08/2023 22:51

@MiniMaxi Thank you. I will definitely report back.

As a child my daughter was always on antibiotics for ear infections. I wish I knew about the long term side effects. She had to have 4 back teeth out , now she has loads of problems with her immune system/ gut & allergies I believe it's all connected .

How is everyone getting on? We saw the consultant today who said her tonsils definitely need removing and she should have been referred much earlier. We are looking for DD to have the Op during October half term.

Oh that’s great news! Not too long 🌼
we see an ENT registrar end of next month, not sure what to expect! They’ve also found polyps in her nose too so not sure if they’re related.

Roselilly36 · 25/08/2023 06:31

@peeinthepool so pleased, your DD will recover quickly, good luck Flowers

peeinthepool · 25/08/2023 06:35

@wobblymum1 good luck with your appointment. Let us know how it goes.x

peeinthepool · 25/08/2023 06:36

@Roselilly36 Thank you! Obviously a little bit nervous about the operation but know we are doing the right thing.

OP posts:
Roselilly36 · 25/08/2023 06:42

@peeinthepool that’s understandable. It was a life changing operation for me, best thing I ever did, very rarely do I have a sore throat now and if I do I don’t have to worry about quinsy/tonsillitis etc. I am sure DD will thrive too. Flowers

MiniMaxi · 25/08/2023 22:48

Thanks for the update OP, hope all goes well

peeinthepool · 02/09/2023 14:38

How is everyone doing? My lg is poorly again and got prescribed antibiotics today. It's only 3 weeks since the last time. i feel a little bit broken by it all today and I know we are fortunate that she has surgery booked but the poor girl can't seem to get a break. How does everyone cope?

OP posts:
Roselilly36 · 03/09/2023 16:10

Poor little one, sorry to read your update, could DD have her surgery asap rather than waiting til half term?

1992H · 03/09/2023 16:29

Glad you’ve a date!

Just wanted to add my five year old had his removed a few weeks ago and the difference was immediate. He was a little sore in the morning when waking for a couple of days, but was sent home with oromorph which was more than sufficient on the couple occasions it was needed.

within hours of the operation he was eating family bags of popcorn and crisps, and he hasn’t really stopped eating since when pre op food and eating was a battle. He had the op at around 4.30pm, woke in recovery by 6pm, and was discharged by 9.30pm.

Speech is clearer, no more choking on them in his sleep, no more constant snotty noses/colds and no more wondering when he’s next going to get tonsillitis.

I felt incredibly guilty in the couple of days before but it’s 100% the best thing I’ve ever done for him. He is so happy it’s been done. Hopefully this helps a little, but if there’s anything else you’d like to know do say.

The only things I wish I’d known before was that they can wake upset in recovery, but he wasn’t actually awake so doesn’t remember it, and that small amounts of bloody snot/liquid from the nose may happen.
My son sneezed in recovery and I panicked at the blood but it was just clearing from where the tonsils and adanoids had been removed.

Good luck with it all! I was amazed with how quickly the benefits have appeared for us and how well he recovered.

peeinthepool · 04/09/2023 15:14

Thank you both. @1992H it's great to hear the op was a positive for your son. I worry about another underlying cause for the constant infections so asking for blood work but I feel guilty about putting her through even that.

OP posts:
wobblymum1 · 04/09/2023 19:50

Don’t feel guilty - if it helps reassure you do it. Bloods can be easy with numbing cream. I felt the same way and 2 Dr’s told me it wasn’t something underlying as if it was she would be poorly all the time and with lots of different things- not just tonsils. the fact they recover (briefly) in between infection in tonsils is apparently hugely reassuring 💞xx

peeinthepool · 04/09/2023 23:23

Thanks @wobblymum1 How is your DD now? Did you get to see the ENT? xx

OP posts:
wobblymum1 · 04/09/2023 23:30

She’s doing ok thank you 🌼We have our appt at end of this month and I’m not sure what they’ll say. She’s been having some weird breathing issues which they aren’t sure are related or not, so lots of questions I’d like answered! I really just want to know if they’re going to take them out, or not, and if not what on Earth is the plan for going forward ☹️
how is your DD tonight? X

peeinthepool · 04/09/2023 23:34

I can understand you need a decision on the plan and surely taking them out is the only option? She seems a lot better now thank you. Which is a relief as she really wants to go to her first day back to school tomorrow. Xx

OP posts:
wobblymum1 · 05/09/2023 10:58

Awwwww happy first day back! Hope it goes well 🌼🌼
glad She’s doing better 😊
I thought they would definitely take them out but she had
viral tonsillitis a few weeks ago and GP said she wasn’t sure they would so I’m feeling pretty lost about it all. Hoping ENT will be clearer and help fix it somehow!

watersoul · 05/11/2023 11:21

It's the OP here, I changed my username. Just an update, my DD had her tonsillectomy on Wednesday. It went well and recovery so far hasn't been too bad at all. Today is day four and she's almost back to normal. I have high hopes that this is the end of monthly infections for her. We were very nervous about the OP but she was a trouper. I hope those of you waiting get sorted soon.

Georgiakd · 03/04/2024 08:33

Hi there,
After any help or advice please! My little girl is 3 and has had tonsillitis 8 times within a year. She is so poorly when she has it & has all the usual symptoms, sore throat, not eating, not sleeping, coughing. My doctors are useless and will not make any referral to ENT even after she’s gone as little as 3 weeks between each episode. It affects everything, her sleep pattern is awful,
time off nursery, never eating properly. She had a sleep study done at the hospital for one night which came back clear which the doctors told me if that picked anything up then they would refer, however it didn’t! Last few months we have noticed her speech delay & her hearing seems to be impacted. She is very clumsy, lip reads, and asks us constantly “what did you say”. Her tonsils are permanently enlarged even without the infection. My question is what can I do?! 😫 I just want ENT to see her and see all these problems and how poorly she is all the time but I just can’t get past the doctors first, which each time is a different doctor! If anyone has any tips or advice or can share there journeys please. Thank you so much x

pinkw6 · 03/04/2024 10:55

I had the same problem as you "Georgiakd"i had to pay privately £250 to talk to an ent doctor who also worked at my local hospital and after the consultation agreed she needed tonsil and adenoid removal and put her on the waiting list on the nhs.....i am still waiting a year later after a few cancellations BUT am hoping we will be seen soon.
not sure if this is something you could do as it is terrible having to pay to be listened to but it seemed the only way to get someone to listen 🙄
