6 year old smelly armpits

Just wondering should I be concerned about my 6 year old daughters smelly armpits? She only just turned 6 and by midday her armpits are really rather pongy. She’s having to give them a very thorough clean with soap and water everything evening to try and get the smell away. I’m now going to buy her some natural (aluminium free) deodorant to try.
I was probably about 11 before I needed to use deodorant.
Is this normal, it seems very young to me?

My boys have the same problem as they run round they sweat alot. We use pit stop. And had worked wonders

dearJayne · 29/07/2023 19:19

My ds was the same at 6. He started using stick deodorant.

I was incredibly worried about my dd too. She's had this since 3 and I was worried about precocious puberty. Gp said just to keep an eye out for signs of breast buds etc. She's 10 now and only just starting to show signs of puberty.

My 6yr old gets whiffy armpits, she uses antibacterial soap which really helps, i am looking at deodorants though especially for hot days

Thanks all, yes I’ve been worried if it’s a sign of early puberty. Luckily no other signs but I will keep an eye out. As long as it’s nothing to worry about then that’s fine. I just don’t want to be negligent and not consult with GP if it is something to be concerned about.
good to know others have experienced similar situation! Thanks again

Have a look at premature adrenarche.
It may fit.
The odd pubic hair or armpit hair may be present.
Are they tall for their age?

togetherlikeglue · 29/07/2023 19:57

What frydaycryday said. Mine started with the same at age 6, plus a move up to the next centile in height. A couple of armpit hairs followed and she was diagnosed with early adrenarche by an endocrinologist. She was monitored which I found reassuring but as it didn't develop into full blown precocious puberty she was eventually discharged around age 10 without any medical interventions. Worth keeping an eye.

Overtherainbow89 · 29/07/2023 20:55

No not tall their age, just average height on 50th percentile. I will keep a close eye out for any hairs or big growth spurts. Thanks for the info. I don’t want to be deemed as wasting GPs time but equally if I should say something I will. Obviously if any other signs I will book an appointment.

We tried all the healthy alternatives which were shit. Both needed deo at 7.

paradyning · 29/07/2023 21:25

It's not puberty it's adenarche. You need to ask for an endocrine appt via GP to get it checked out.

paradyning · 29/07/2023 21:26

Teeny tiny chance of something nasty other than adenarche which is why you need an endo appt to rule it out.

One of my son's had smelly sweat at 7 but he did do a lot of sport. He showered in the morning then DH showed him about putting on the Dove got Men dry stick deodorant.

My daughter is 6 years and has smelly armpits....should i buy her deodorant roll or what please help...😢🙏

TheLurpackYears · 08/02/2025 08:02

Also try a light exfoliating first. There might be a build up of old wiffy skin.

Hey, so thankfully my daughter is now nearly 8 and no other signs of puberty apart from ongoing tendency to smelly armpits! We use a very natural deodorant for her - don’t use high street products - they usually have aluminium and lots of other chemicals that I wouldn’t recommend using on young children.
We make sure she has a bath daily and try to stick to cotton/natural fibre clothing rather than synthetic fabrics that make one sweat more.
Hope that helps
