Chickenpox vaccine

Is there any reason why I shouldn't get my child the chickenpox vaccine? Apart from the cost. My eldest daughter had really bad chickenpox and i felt totally useless, she was so uncomfortable. I really dont want my youngest to go through that, so thinking of paying for the vaccine. Has anyone's child had any side effects from it? Or any reason why not to get it? Thank you.

No reason not to get it. In many countries it is given as standard. I would recommend if you can afford it.

Id deffo get it
We got the first one for my son but he actually already had the virus do came out in spots in between dose one and two! Then the baby got it. So yeh, go for it

Both my kids have had it, absolutely no side effects. I’d do it in a heartbeat to skip the misery of chickenpox.

I think the reasons for NHS not offering are about herd immunity and shingles in general population (possibly cost too. So not downsides for your child.

My child nearly died from complications from chicken pox. I would get the vaccine in a heartbeat if I had my time again. I thought she was going to die. We all did. The most horrific experience of any parents life. Get the vaccine. So many children are fine with chicken pox but so many aren't too. I wouldn't role the dice.

All my kids have had chicken pox. There wasn't even the option for the older ones. I'd have said I wasn't concerned about chicken pox particularly, as long as they have it at the normal kind of age.

If I could go back, even though I'd have had to pay for it as it wasn't on the schedule at the time, I'd have liked to have got it for one of my children. They developed an unrelated medical condition later in life and it turns out they would have been better off to get the vaccine than have had the natural disease. I won't go into all the details. Hindsight obviously makes a difference there. They are now having to get the shingles vaccine at the age of 20 due to high risk, and it's not cheap.

That's just my experience.

Mine both got it, no side effects. Standard in most eu countries

After my first was hospitalised with chickenpox I made damn sure number two was vaccinated.

As for side effects one or two red spots and that was it.

On one hand I am so glad number 2 was vaccinated but on other I feel guilty as hell about not vaccinating my first, especially when I glimpse a chickenpox scar and remember how bad it was.

StaringAtTheWater · 31/07/2023 00:16

Both mine were vaccinated. Other than a short lived high temperature (and they get temperatures easily), there were no side effects

Curlymam88 · 31/07/2023 11:16

Thank you everyone for your messages. My eldest had them pretty bad and I hadn't heard of the vaccine when she was little. So I'm pretty sure I want to get it for my youngest. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything I was missing and because its a live vaccine just wanted to know how others little ones were after it if they were ill. A temperature is manageable, better than getting chickenpox anyway.
