Daily headaches in 6 year old

My little girl, 6, has been experiencing headaches almost daily since the end of February. They usually don't last very long at all, they come on very suddenly, she's fine one second and the next having a full on meltdown about her head. Typically it only happens once a day, and lasts just a a few minutes, she'll throw her head around and moan and get distressed. the pain is always at the back of her head and neck. I can usually distract her very quickly and sometimes she's fine within 2 minutes - playing and eating normally. She had an MRI at the end of March which was clear, her eye sight is perfect. She is otherwise a healthy and happy girl. Sometimes the headache is triggered by her getting annoyed at her little sister or something annoying her. Has anyone experienced something like this? I have health anxiety so i get so stressed out about it all. I would love to hear if you have experienced something similar and what might have worked.

Ive just been told my 6 year old dd has ice pick headaches. She gets them in the back of her head and stops her in her tracks but only last a few seconds but hers have started getting more and more over the last few months. We have the hospital in august to speak more abiut them.

@rach2713 I had never of ice pick headaches - I hope your appointment in August is helpful. Has your little one had to do any tests?

I had never heard of them either until tuesday when they said. I was a bit disappointed as they said it was that with out seeing her and prescribed her melatonin tablets but i am not giving her them until after her appointment in august.

I hope this doesn't come across as dismissive, but if they usually come on when she's getting annoyed/frustrated could it be behavioural? A way to bring the focus/attention back to her/remove herself from the source of annoyance? Just thinking along similar lines of my DD who always gets a 'tummy ache' when she doesn't want to do something!

I hope the appointment goes well in August x

@LG93 I think at times it could be down behavioural, but other times she will seem quite distressed, so it's hard to know for sure. My worry is if the MRI may have missed something sinister!

How did you get on @riasinha - did you get an answer to your DD’s headaches?

Riseandshinemom · 04/05/2024 12:23

Hey @riasinha , Hope your DD is well. How did you go about with finding the solution to your DD’s headaches? I am on a similar boat with my 5 yr old.
