Vomiting 10yo girl...when do I need a doctor?

DD was sick overnight Saturday to Sunday a handful of times. Some tummy cramps inbetween as might be expected.
Sunday daytime she was fine, quiet and under the weather, but not sick. Wakes up at midnight and is sick.
Stays home Monday, Tuesday....nice quiet days and is absolutely fine. Family day out Wednesday she's still fine. Thursday (today) she wakes at 5.30 and is sick again. She just says she has tummy ache in-between but it is absolutely not stopping her do things and have fun. She has had some very loose poos this week but not diarrhoea urgency if that makes sense.

So 3 bouts of vomiting over 4-5 days. It seems too long and sporadic for a bug, not intense enough for food poisoning. What do we think is happening and more importantly does she need a doctor or is that a total overreaction?

She is not a poorly child. I can't remember when she last had an upset tummy and actually being sick is a total rarity. Whatever she has hasn't spread to the other 2 kids or us 2 parents.

Help me parent!

As it’s been going on since Saturday, and we’re heading towards the weekend again, I’d be ringing for advice today.

Thank you. I agree feeling like I'm wasting someone's time. We actually go away Saturday too, though fortunately we're staying close to home, so a change of scenery holiday rather than traveling a long way.

Agree should read hate. Not sure what happened there.

I’d her checked out, it’s could be a grumbling appendix!
I hope she’s ok and you get to go away 🌼

She shouldn’t be on days out if she has loose stools, that’s diarrhoea. She’s probably worse today as she went on a day out whilst sick. 4/5 days for a tummy bug isn’t unusual

Morewineplease10 · 27/07/2023 07:15

I think it is unusual and I'd ring GP.
You're right, doesn't sound like a bug or food poisoning.

It will take 5 - 10 mins of a professional's time.

BendingSpoons · 27/07/2023 07:23

I suspect it's just a bug that is varying it's presentation. DD spectacularly vomited, was lethargic but mostly OK with occasional loose poos. DS and I got it and had the diarrhea but no vomiting. It lingered for about 10 days. On a couple of occasions the cramps nearly made me sick.

Likelihood is if she is hydrated, they will say it is self-limiting and let it run it's course.

WeWereInParis · 27/07/2023 07:26

I remember DD1 having a bug where she was sick Wednesday morning, then a few times Thursday morning, then fine Friday- Monday, and sick again Monday night. I assumed it was her stomach still being a bit sensitive post bug that made her throw up again on the Monday, maybe something she'd eaten that had bothered it. She was fine after that.

Obviously call the GP if you're worried, but I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't that worried. I don't think it's that long.

My ds10 had this earlier this year , was fine in between the being sick then it would come on all of a sudden .He too is a child that is very rarely ill , we called the Dr who wanted him to go to hosp to have his bloods done . When we got there they didn't do his bloods just his sats and sent him home with the phone no. to call if he got green diarrhoea. Sure enough the diarrhoea started next day at 7am , we ended up in hospital all weekend with him on a drip for 24 hours . I never caught it even thou I was in a room with him for 2 and a half days ! Very strange !

Fudgewomble · 27/07/2023 07:30

Has she been on a very bland diet and dairy free? After vomiting bugs the gut is very sensitive - I learnt the hard way that milk and icecream would trigger more vomiting in DC up to a week after the initial illness. The bug had gone but their stomachs couldn’t handle dairy products for a while.

LadyGeorginaSmythe · 27/07/2023 07:33

I've tried to keep her diet bland but she hasn't. And yes there was an ice cream yesterday when out, and a McDonalds...(sibling birthday).
I'll pop an online request to GP for a phone appointment.
Thanks all

The GP will just say it's a bug and to wait it out. If she isn't terribly unwell with and it hydrated there's nothing they can do. It will only be worth them investigating other causes if it persists beyond a couple of weeks. So personally I'd just wait and see.

OddOne2023 · 27/07/2023 07:43

Mac Donald's? Not sure id bother Gp unless she has a day or v plain food fluids and is still sick.

Does she have temperature?

DidyouNO · 27/07/2023 07:57

Of course phone for advice if you need to but I don't find this completely abnormal. One of my children is sick like this whenever he gets a bug. I think he just has a more delicate stomach. He's not sick very often at all but when he is it grumbles along for 7-10 days sometimes. Hope she gets better soon.

LadyGeorginaSmythe · 27/07/2023 08:13

Worries abated. Will wait it out and force the plain diet

If it's reassuring at all this has happened to ds a few times where he's had a bug. Normal vomiting for a day or so then would get better and then have a random vomit after eating or drinking. Not sure what it was but I think it just took him a while for his tummy to get back to normal. Sometimes they can get a temporary dairy intolerance after a bug so might be that.
But if you're worried obviously get it checked by GP. Hope she's better soon.
