My daughter is having colonoscopy, endoscopy and barbarium test (swallow test) on Friday. She’s 12 does anyone have any experience on how to prepare for after procedure and how to help after she comes home. We are a day case. Sorry just a worried mum

Hi @SportyMumOf2. My 8yo DC had an OGD under GA - is your DD having a GA or sedation? My DC had theirs at bristol childrens hospital and the only issue I had was that the doc told DH and I the risks of the procedure in front of our DC, so this greatly unsettled them as DC was already nervous as it was. My advice would be to make sure the docs tell you the risks away from your child - keeping your child came is important. Hopefully you will have a play therapist too - we did and it helped distract our DC. My DC was poorly after the effects of the GA but the next day they were right as rain. Take a few toys (Nintendo / books etc) with you and let them wear super comfy clothes. My DC was super cuddly as they were so nervous, but overall it was an OK experience. Best of luck x

My son has had many colonoscopies / endoscopies' since he was 8 [ crohns disease ]. Children are always given a GA. The prep beforehand is often the worst part for them.
Be prepared for a wait when you go for the procedures. They usually take the younger ones in first, so take plenty of things to keep you both occupied.

The procedure itself doesn't take long and they will then go into recovery. Depending on how soon they come round, they will be offered something to eat and drink and you will be allowed to come to see them. It always took my son a long time to come round after a GA, so I always had a bit of a wait.

Once home, it can take a few days for the GA to get through their system, so they may feel more tired. They sometimes get a bit of stomach pain, but on the whole they are back to normal fairly quickly.

Thank you both @Boatshoes @Londonnight She is having a GA yes. DH and I had a meeting with the teams on Monday without DD so we discussed the risks so we were glad they asked us to attend without her. She has started her laxatives to empty her bowel today and that its self has been unpleasant for her causing significant cramps. She has not had GA before so worried about that.

Thank you kindly for updating on what happens after

Hi,

Only just found this post.

How did it go on Friday? Wish I had found this sooner to reassure you thst it's really
not has bad as you think. My daughter was also 12 when she had her first colonoscopy and endoscopy and she's had two more since, she is almost 18.

Hope it all went well and your daughter recovered from the procedure in no time.
