Broken collarbone- things to do over the summer holidays?

DC (12) has fractured their collarbone - it's not too painful but they're really bored.

Can't do any of their usual (sporty) summer holiday things at the moment like swimming, playing in the park with friends, football.

Any ideas what they could do instead (one handed as can't really move arm!)?

What sort of things are they into besides sports? Does they like computer games or board games like chess?

Cinema . Geo catching. Interactive museums.

What's on at your local library...summer reading challenge?

What have they said the recovery period is? My dd, admittedly a bit younger, wasn't incapacitated that long...

SportyMumOf2 · 25/07/2023 21:21

Both my DD and DS have broken their collar bones. I found sleeping was the worst for a few days and after 2-3 weeks they could do more activities. Hope your kid is like them

Cinema.
Movies at home - when DD was quite unwell we worked our way through all the marvel films in order last summer.
Potter painting - depending on the arm.
Uno/Board games.

My DD broke hers 5 weeks ago.
We were told 4-6 weeks recovery.
She was in pain the first 3 days, and probably for 5-6 days when waking in the morning. Since then it's just been an inconvenience. She stopped wearing the sling after 3 weeks. Almost back to normal now. We've crafted, walked, watched TV, played gentle football etc.
Fingers crossed it will fly by

Coding? Movie editing? Something digital but creative at the same time!

My ds broke his collarbone the week before he went on PGL and two weeks before he went on scout camp. He still went and had a fab time. He did literally everything except - contact sports, caving(which involved crawling) and climbing. I was amazed at how quick he was back to normal.

This is all sounding v positive in terms of recovery time! Dr said 6-8 weeks for the bone to heal and Google said additional time after that to fully regain strength and movement.

So I'm hopeful it might be less than that!

I think it probably depends on how badly it was broken. My DS was very lucky. Looking back it was good it was in the summer holiday as he loves rugby and football and would have been really sad to have missed any of the season.
