Dd (11) has been having stomach aches for about 18 months. Doctors have done a bit of investigating. One test was positive for inflammation which dr said could indicate ibd, or crohns and she was referred to a paediatrician. Paediatrician didn't think her symptoms fit ibd or crohns and said it could be functional abdominal pain, or possibly an issue with dairy.

Dd gave up dairy for 7 weeks. She did complain of stomach ache a bit less during this time, but was still getting some (and over the 18 months there have been brief periods where she's not getting the tummy aches as much). She had dairy again a week ago and no obvious signs that it was a problem (I expected maybe stomach ache/diarrhoea/vomiting). However this morning she's got upset tummy, acid reflux and feels like she might be sick. My question is is it possible for the reaction to dairy to take this long to occur? I'm feeling a bit unsure now whether this is just a bug or something, or whether it means we can't rule out dairy as the issue. Really appreciate any thoughts, thank you

CMPA is not the same as lactose intolerance
CMPA is due to the proteins in the milk and lactose intolerance is due to the sugars in the milk.

Did they rule out coeliac disease?

BelleSauvage9 · 23/07/2023 16:19

@dementedpixie I'm aware they're not the same thing 👍 just possible it could be either of them causing the problems so wanted to cover my bases. Yes tested for coeliac

I would think that's not the dairy

There are so many foods that can cause problems though - right back to absolute basics like white fish and potatoes and gradually add stuff in

My 11dd has (suspected) cmpi, dietician couldn't confirm but she has reacted to dairy since being a baby. In fact she was an awful baby who screamed and was permanently constipated, we never made the link to the proteins in my breast milk till we weaned her.

Her bowels have become distended over time, as rather than the usual symptoms, she suffers from severe constipation, bloating, impaction and stomach ache. Years of this have left her with sluggish bowels that are only starting to sort themselves out.

She can eat some dairy, but milk, yogurt, cream, ice-cream and too much cheese definitely make her ill. It will take at least a few days but often a couple of weeks for the symptoms to start showing when she has eaten something she shouldn't. It's not an allergy but an intolerance so the reaction is not immediate. We were advised at least 6 weeks with no dairy and then start introducing the milk ladder; one item every week and watch for reactions!

Sorry, just to confirm we never got very far on the milk ladder as she always reacted. I think it's absolutely possible for it to be a dairy issue with your dd but maybe be a bit more strict with reintroducing and eliminating.

Hi @BelleSauvage9 Just wondering if you found out what was causing the digestive problems for your daughter. Hope she is feeling better.
