Roaccutane privately

naughty40me · 22/07/2023 17:20

Hi

My DS16 has awful acne.

The GP has tried 3 different antibiotics and several creams.

He has now been referred to a consultant in order to start Roaccutane.
However the waiting list is really long.

I've never used private medicine before.

How much would it cost to get this sorted for him.

I'm starting a new job so will have some spare cash after years of very low income. I would love to be able to get him treated as its really affecting his confidence.

Any advice/recommendations appreciated thank you.

I'm a GP, we don't do bloods at the request of private clinics. Don't assume you can do that unless you've heard it from your GP

You have to provide the same treatment as you would have given on the nhs though. You can’t discriminate against private treatment if the patient would have been prescribed roaccutane by the nhs with gp follow up you’d need to still do the bloods

If a patient is having Roaccutane on the NHS, the consultant does all the bloods. So exactly the same as privately.

Both myself and daughter have been in roaccutane. I did mine through private health insurance and my daughter was via NHS. She unfortunately wasn't covered.

For me my cost for the consultations were covered by my health insurance. I had my blood tests done by my GP/practice nurse as per the request of my consultant at no cost to me. I had to pay for my prescriptions privately and they cost around £80 every four weeks. I also had to do a pregnancy test every four weeks to allow me to receive the prescription. I calculate that it would have cost me about £2000 all in without health insurance.

My daughter tried every cream, antibiotic, contraceptive pill and nothing made the slightest difference. They did not want to put her on this medication without trying everything else.

She was put on the waiting list whilst trying the other medications. The waitlist was initially about 2 years. I called and chased this up after about one year of waiting and was informed we had at least another 80 week wait.

I asked about cancellations and stated I would be willing to attend within an hours notice! This was on a Friday and on Monday afternoon I received a call with an appointment for the next day. After just over 6 months of treatment she is like a new person. The difference in her skin is as remarkable as the boost in her confidence.

I wish you and yours all the very best.

I should have said I'm in Glasgow. I've heard lots of variations on who paid what, who got bloods done by their GP etc within this are.

All my daughter's tests and prescriptions were provided at her four weekly visits to the roaccutane clinic at the old Yorkhill Hospital. Now known as West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital.

Oh wow that's amazing to read I'm so pleased for her!

It's definitely a great drug just a pity it's so hard to get access to.

We are in West Yorkshire and would need to use Pinderfields hospital unless we go private.

Thank you for your kind wishes. So happy to hear about you and your DD's story ❤️

Hi did you manage to get started on roaccutane? My son is on waiting list too but told another 4 months. His skin is getting worse. He's tried many antibiotics and creams and nothing is working. He's so depressed. I'm really considering private but worried about the cost .

Hi there

I'm sorry to hear that 😔 it's really not nice for them.

We haven't started yet but we do have an appointment.

It was meant to be 9th August but the hospital cancelled on us.

Now it's for 11th September. I just hope it doesn't get put back any further.

My DS starts college next week and I know his confidence is low. He's very self conscious about it.

Hope your DS gets sorted soon too.

The sooner the better

Roaccutane is an amazing miracle product

For most people it Gets rid of acne very fast and it tends to never return

You do need to take seriously the impact it can have on your mental health.
I work with teens and have been quite shocked what has happened to some of them while prescribed this.
I'm not saying don't use it but certainly don't take using it lightly.

That's not actually true though as my DD has roaccutane on the NHS from the hospital and the GP does her bloods and has never questioned it

naughty40me · 27/08/2023 13:11

I'm not sure what will happen with the blood tests.

I'm hoping they say he can just go for them with the nurse at our local surgery because I don't drive and its 3 buses to the hospital.

We will see what happens.
