Help me for travel sickness in child?

wobblymum1 · 18/07/2023 20:27

Any fellow travel sick kid mamas?

Both my kids get car sick-
Kwells are for age 10 + so my 7 year old can’t take them.

I’ve tried all the homeopathic and pressure point wrist bands with no luck ☹️

any magic tips?! We have a looooong drive in a week coming up and I’m dreading how hard it will be.

They have kids Kwells, this is what a pharmacist recommended to me.

Marshmar · 18/07/2023 20:29

I bought kwells kids from Boots. DS is 8 but I forgot to pack them.. are you sure you have the right ones?

Pigeonnoir · 18/07/2023 20:30

You can get kids kwells. My 8 year old is best sitting in front with booster . No reading , no turning around in car .

Fallulah · 18/07/2023 20:32

Ginger biscuits or the capsules of ginger you can get from health food shops.

Ready salted crisps.

Don’t travel first thing.

Take a bucket - I was not sick if the bucket was in the car!

See if they can train themselves to go to sleep in the car. That was the only thing that reliably worked for me!

No books, games, reading or looking at anything inside the car. No looking out of the side windows!

I still get horribly car sick so I drive everywhere!

wobblymum1 · 18/07/2023 20:32

Oh thanks! My pack has 10+ on it, didn’t know you could get younger 🤦‍♀️
annoyingly the front car seat on a booster seat works well for both but I have
to do turn about and the one in the back inevitably feels awful in meantime ☹️

Kids Kwells are for 4+. I needed them when my son was 2 months away from 4 but pharmacist agreed it was fine. Worked pretty well.

funnily enough I still get very travel sick too as an adult unless I’m driving! Must be hereditary ☹️

Try Stugeron. It's always worked for my DS and it's suitable for age 5 upwards.

CommaChameleon7 · 18/07/2023 21:38

Another vote for Sturgeron - I've used them for years with my daughter. Dissolvable tablet too so no dramas about swallowing it

Blueuggboots · 18/07/2023 21:42

I used to have dreadful travel sickness. We got tablets from the pharmacy but strong ones.

They used to have joyriders when I was a kid (I'm pushing 50) which used to make me even sicker!!!

Saisong · 18/07/2023 21:45

We used Sturgeron and wrist bands, but if it is any help DD outgrew travel sickness by about 13 or so.

TropicalTrama · 18/07/2023 21:50

Everything that’s been said + sit the one in the back in the middle seat so they can look out of the front windscreen.

whoruntheworldgirls · 18/07/2023 21:55

My 6yr old takes kwells kids, work great ace can be taken 20 minutes before a journey (some tablets need to be taken an hour before)
She also has pressure wrist bands, or as she knows them, her magic bands, not sure if they work or just her brain thinking they do but she never feels sick when wearing them.

fifegirl75 · 18/07/2023 22:06

We use phenergan syrup, most pharmacies have it, works well 😊

stripeymonster · 18/07/2023 22:21

Stugeron - way more effective than Quells. Also, no sweet food for snacking. Salty food helps. Music on - headphones seem to help with the nausea too. Agree that sickest child sits in the middle seat. Also, keep handy a stash of baby wipes, carrier bags, spare clothing, and a big ikea bag to cover seat if disaster strikes.

LividHot · 18/07/2023 22:23

Dramamine from 2yo.

Have to get it online but the only way we got more than a mile from the house for a long time.

Plump82 · 18/07/2023 22:28

Agree with Stugeron. Works better and also makes you much less drowsy. Don't travel on an empty stomach but whatever they each make sure it's fairly light. Have ice cold water to hand. Have the windows rolled down or air-conditioning on. Ginger biscuits to nibble on..no reading or looking at devices and make sure they just face forward. So no looking to the side to chat.
I have had terrible travel sickness since I was a child and it's probably getting worse the older I get. Oh and with Stugeron it must be taken at least 2 hours before travel. Any less than that and you're on fo plums. I normally aim for 3 hrs before.

Hellokittymania · 18/07/2023 22:28

I am visually impaired, get horrible migraines, and found out last year I think that migraines are also linked to carsickness. I have always really struggled in vehicles, the exception being motorbikes, when I lived in Vietnam, thankfully because I had to take them quite a bit with friends. Anyway, I don’t like going in the car…

i’m also a bookworm, so if they do need something to do, maybe either put on an audiobook, music, or try to get them used to just playing with Play-Doh or some thing else they can feel, but not look at. maybe pop it or something?

it also helped to have something in my stomach before going in the car, and I remember apples, plain crisps, and crackers would help.

to the person who suggested sleeping, I could never do this because it would make me feel even more sick if I had to lie down in the backseat of the car. sitting up front, if you have air-conditioning in the car, try that, or open the window.

Topbird29 · 18/07/2023 22:32

We use kwells kids - have done trips over 2 hours and they were fine.
Used to use phenegran liquid when they were little.
Have sick bags (got from amazon), and at 9 and 11 they know what to do. Need to try a few trips without tabs, but also don't want to as don't want the risk! Although oldest did school trip this week on bus for about 2 hours each way. Took a travel sock tablet in morning, but forgot before coming back and wasn't ill. So there may be hope for us!

MissedItByThisMuch · 18/07/2023 22:35

Yep Stugeron is brilliant for my carsick kid. We can’t get it in Oz so I stock up if I’m ever in UK! Better than Kwells which we can get. And small savoury meal beforehand, not looking at devices etc as pps have said. Good luck, it makes car trips so stressful.

Imnotdrinkingmerlot · 18/07/2023 22:41

Another vote for sturgeron. It helps but nothing is a guarantee. Dc and I get travel sickness really badly on every form of transport - really is awful!

A bowl, wipes, water also helps - stops the panic of where am I going to be sick?

stevalnamechanger · 19/07/2023 00:34

Hve you tried the motion sickness glasses , can get on amazon

My DD is still travel sick within 15 minutes and she's 27 ! Someone told me it's more prevalent in people with ASD which she has but I am 60 and also travel sick 🤢 but not ASD. I have the spill proof travel sickness bags and front seat travel for my DD and I drive everywhere as my sickness is better when I drive.
