Chicken pox vaccine - 9 month old

Hi,

Has anyone booked a private vaccination at Superdrug for their baby to receive the chickenpox vaccine?

The website says they offer it from 9 months onwards but my local pharmacist says it isn't licensed for use in 9 month olds except in exceptional circumstances.

Wondering if anyone has any experiences?

I was told it was only from 12m plus, so personally I would wait a bit. My DS had it at 13m and was fine, no side effects at all. I was expecting a bit of a temp, grouchiness like the other jabs but the chicken pox one was by far the easiest. We are on the 4th round of chicken pox at nursery since he’s had the jab over a year ago and touch wood he hasn’t got it.

Sorry I forgot to add we went to a private clinic to get it done. It cost £20 more from memory than Superdrug but I just felt safer that way - probably silly I know.

It's licensed from 12 months. Just remember if you get the vaccine that they'll need boosters when they're 18 to protect in adulthood (if you catch it naturally you generally have immunity for life), but yes they're a good option.

@Jigslaw I was told by my GP that was a possibility but not a given and, as with getting chicken pox, a percentage of people won’t become immune. I think it’s 75% won’t need a booster. Still I’d rather a booster than chicken pox!

Yes the vaccine is a great option just something to be aware of that it's strongly advised.
