Noticed this on teenage sons arm. He said it's been there a few days. Now I'm thinking to last Monday when we went swimming on river on Moors and could it be a tick bite, he never noticed be had a tick or anything since and does tend to check after going on Moors.
Will contact GP tomorrow but ds can't sleep and is worrying he has lymes disease.

Doesn't look like a bullseye tick bite. Just looks like a nasty bug but defo get it checked.

I suppose it could be, but I had one and it looked nastier than that in the middle, and was more swollen up. No subsequent disease. That looks like normal swelling from a midge or mozzie bite, or just a random spot. Measure it to track the size in case it gets a lot bigger. Put on some sting relief cream or get some hydrocortisone bite/sting cream - it’s great stuff. That small swelling doesn’t look like the typical rash for lymes to me (not an expert).

Also - most tick bites don’t end up with lymes disease. Take a look at this: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/lyme-disease/

Is he feeling ok in himself?

Lyme disease

Read NHS information on Lyme disease, which is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks.

And tbh I think he’d have noticed a tick sticking to him right on his arm. It’s not that big a mark.

YakChewCrumbs · 16/07/2023 23:00

Looks like when I get a midge or mosquito bite. No harm in checking tomorrow though. Anti histamine if you have some thought.

Thanks everyone! 😊

I have already done a GP request with a picture.
I hope its OK. I keep hearing awful things about lymes disease.

Just looks like a bite to me. Unless it shows the target pattern I'd just leave it tbh. At most I'd ask a pharmacist.

My DD contracted Lyme during lockdown from a tick bite, so I am acutely aware of what the rash looks like. This doesn’t seem to have the ‘bullseye’ appearance one would expect with Lyme. Hope that helps alleviate his worry!

Changethetoner · 16/07/2023 23:30

If a tick bit his arm, the tick would almost certainly still be there, clinging on with its head buried in his skin. it is possible (but unlikely) that a tick could be dislodged by accident, but he would have been aware it was there or at least aware his arm was incredibly itchy.

My guess is it was a bite from something other than a tick.

I'd go horsefly.

Yes he didn't see a tick at the time.
There are a lot of ticks where we went though and been twice in last week. He went on a school trip there last year and ended up with 3 on his legs!

Ticks don't bite as such. They attach themselves and suck the blood. Lymes disease is mainly caught by the tick regurgitating it's stomach content into you, and even then it needs to have fed on a deer with lymes.

So if no tick attached (and using a tick remover is the best way to stop regurgitation, never burn or smother them) then a mosquito is the most likely explanation. Take some anti histamine.

Aqua82 · 17/07/2023 10:51

He's seen someone this morning, he wanted to go in by himself and he said GP said its 'probably not' a tick bite which is a bit vague. It doesn't have the usual type of rash. I will keep an eye on it and see if it spreads or anything.
